MATILDA PHALEN It is with great sorrow that the family announces the peaceful passing of Matilda Phalen on April 22, 2016. Matti was predeceased by her husband Donald (in 2013) and is survived by daughter Dawn and husband Jim Lee; son Bruce and wife Teresa; grandchildren, Jacqueline and Daniel; sisters, Adele Slavik, Grace Czegledi; brother George Isaac and numerous nieces and nephews. Matti was born in Kipling, SK in 1922. Her family moved to Toronto in 1932 where she finished her schooling then worked at The Canadian Press in Toronto and New York. Matti met her husband Donald during a dance at the U of T and married in 1947. In 1963 the family moved to Winnipeg when Donald accepted the leadership role for the local YMCAs and camps. Summers were spent on Isabella Island on Georgian Bay with her extended family including brothers, sisters and their children. It was a truly happy time in her life. Matti loved to entertain at home and was known for her excellent cuisine. She volunteered for many organizations over the years including International Hope Canada. In her spare time, she enjoyed a good game of bridge. We will all miss her devotion, generosity and loyalty and we feel so blessed to have had her as our mother, nana, sister and aunt. Dear to our hearts, she will be always missed. Donations in her memory may be made to International H.O.P.E.
