Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryHERBERT KENNETH (KEN) RUTHERFORD September 16, 1927 - March 6, 2016 It is with great sadness we announce the passing, after a lengthy illness, of Herbert Kenneth (Ken) Rutherford: husband, brother, father, grandfather, great-grandfather. Ken leaves to mourn his wife Doreen; his brother Robert (Valerie); his children: Maureen, Earl, Neil (Debbie) and Miles (Mavis); his grandchildren: Riqui (Rick), Jamie, Karyn, Darren (Mel), Raelene, Jennifer (Corey), Brittney (Nahom) and Julie (Rob); and his great-grandchildren: Connor, Savannah, Diego, Brianna, Liam, Marlea, Leighton and Layla. Ken was predeceased by his mother Ettie May (Maisie) Rutherford and father Herbert (Bert) Rutherford. Ken was born and raised in Eriksdale, Manitoba. After attending Angus Business School in Winnipeg, he returned to Eriksdale and married the love of his life, Doreen Breckman, on May 1, 1949. He worked as the Secretary Treasurer of the municipality, a job he held for 45 years. His job grew to include being a magistrate, dispensing drivers' licences, selling insurance and other duties as assigned. He loved his job, which gave him the opportunity to meet with the people of the community and keep up with changes. He could always be counted on for a lively conversation or an animated story. Ken was an avid hunter and fisherman, proud of his trophies and master angler awards. He shared those adventures and misadventures with everyone. He also spent many a day enjoying the outdoors with his children and grandchildren, instilling in them a love of the nature. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren were very important to him and he had the ability to make them all feel special. He had a unique sense of humour and perspective on life, which we all grew to appreciate. He will be deeply missed. We would like to thank the staff of the E. M. Crowe Memorial Hospital for the care and kindness shown to him during his lengthy stay. You helped him find his way when he was travelling down the "highways" of the hospital and were there for the final "trip home". In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the E. M. Crowe Memorial Hospital Guild, For use in the Palliative Care Unit', in care of Irene Sigurdson, P.O. Box 474, Eriksdale, MB R0C 0W0, or to the Eriksdale Personal Care Home, in care of Sharon Thorgilsson, P.O. Box 130, Eriksdale, MB R0C 0W0. A celebration of Ken's life will be held at 12:00 p.m. on May 7, 2016 at Eriksdale Recreation Centre with Sharon Russell officiating.
