PETER SAWATZKY July 2, 1921 - May 6, 2016 Peacefully, Peter has moved on to the Lord after a good life. He leaves with cherished memories his loving wife Maria, daughters Marian, Yvonne (Bob), Patricia, Sherry (Rene), and Kim, his 10 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandson, who have a special place in his heart. Dad loved all of his family unconditionally. Born to Katherina and Peter Sawatzky, Dad was the youngest of 11 children. He attended school until age 14 then worked at many jobs to help support his family when his dad became ill. At age 22 he enlisted in the army and served overseas in the Second World War. Near the end of the war he was part of the liberation of Holland and that is where he met the love of his life, Marie. They married in Holland on January 11, 1946 and upon returning to Canada eventually made their home in St. James where they resided until 2015. Peter worked for Manitoba Telephone System for 35 years. Dad and Mom were proud and active members of St. James United Church and the Canadian Legion Branch No. 4. They also did a lot of volunteer work in the community and lived their lives in service to others. Spending time with family and friends was very important to Dad. Peter enjoyed fishing, gardening, reading, and camping and games especially at Grand Beach. He had many adventures on his daily walks. Dad also leaves to cherish special memories with his sister Susan, many nieces and nephews, extended family and friends who were all blessed to share in his life. Family thanks the caring staff at Deer Lodge Centre. A special thank you to all the wonderful people who joined our family in caring for Dad and for your support, love and kindness. You are all our angels. Thank you to Legion No. 4 for the visits and helping with final arrangements honouring Peter. A celebration of Peter's life will be held on Friday, May 13 at Neil Bardal Funeral Centre, 3030 Notre Dame Avenue (across from Brookside Cemetery) at 1:00 p.m. A reception will follow at the St. James Legion, No. 4, 1755 Portage Avenue. A private family interment service will happen at a later date. In lieu of flowers, a donation in Peter's memory may be made to the Alzheimer Society, 10-120 Donald Street, Winnipeg, MB R3C 9Z9 or a charity of your choice. Condolences & Memories (4 entries)

  • I spent my early years on Parkview Street. I knew Patricia quite well as we were the same age and often in the same classroom at school. As well, we were members of the St. James United Church Choir. I would often be playing at their house and have fond memories of how kind Peter and Maria Sawatzky were. Great memories of Peter and the rest of the family. Sincere thoughts to all of you for your loss. - Posted by: Sharon Davies (Addison) (Neighbour) on: Sep 02, 2016

  • My Parents lived next door to Pat & Marie and I grew up with their wonderful Daughters. My heart goes out to you all for the loss of your Father. Your Dad was a kind and hardworking man. I remember your Mom & Dad tending their garden, the hug they gave me at my own Dad's memorial many years ago. Sorry for your loss......Michael & Margaret Reid, Calgary, AB - Posted by: Michael Reid (Neighbour) on: May 26, 2016

  • I have very fond memories of my Uncle Pete. I always looked forward to seeing him. He was always so friendly and kind and will be missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you during this difficult time. - Posted by: Tina and Cornie Wiebe, Winkler (niece) on: May 09, 2016
