Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryVIVIAN AGNES WHITAKER (GARRIOCH) January 5, 1920 - October 14, 2015 MEMORIAL SERVICE Saturday, May 14 Deeply mourned by her daughter Carol Cowles and son-in-law Ellwood Smyrl, beloved granddaughter Jamie Chahine (Angeline); dear grandson Glen Cowles and Nathalie (Greg, Gabriel and Louis). Survived by siblings Marion (BC) and Clayton (Beulah), nieces and nephews. Vivian was predeceased by her infant son, nephew Johnny Gach, parents, and five siblings. Born in Portage, Vivian faced the adversity of the dirty 30s with dignity and courage. Coming to Winnipeg in her teens, she toiled in the garment industry for 45 years. As a gifted seamstress, she made many beautiful creations. She also baked yummy cookies and sent them as far as Afghanistan for Glen. As a single parent, she placed great importance on family and loved us unconditionally. She was a member of the Eagles Drill Team and enjoyed fun times with the girls' from Aux. No. 23 including memorable travel to Hawaii. She flew across Canada, cruised the Caribbean, visited Carol and Ellwood's AZ home, and toured the USA. She led an active life at Lions Place until she could no longer live independently. She celebrated her 90th birthday with a family gathering at West Park where she treasured visits with her precious Angeline. Vivian's intelligence and strength helped her overcome many hardships. Her beauty, grace and wit made her a welcome addition at any gathering. We were blessed to have her as our matriarch but as blindness and dementia condemned her to relive personal tragedies, it was time for her to go. As she would say: "I've had elegant sufficiency." We will miss you Madam. Thanks to West Park, CNIB and Dr. Stockl for their considerate care. Memorial Service, Saturday, May 14 at 2:00 p.m., Thomson Funeral Chapel, Sherbrook and Broadway. Donations to CNIB MB or Assiniboine Park Conservancy appreciated. Death leaves a heartache that eases with time, Love leaves warm memories that will always be mine.'
