She grew up in Port Arthur, Shoal Lake, Manitoba and Winnipeg, graduating from St. John's high school. After attending United College Carolyn entered nursing at the Children's Hospital of Winnipeg, graduating with the class of 1951. She then went on to study public health nursing at the University of Toronto. In 1954 Carolyn married W. Murray Smith and they moved to Ottawa in 1958 when he became the Member of Parliament for Winnipeg North. They later divorced and Carolyn returned to Winnipeg and resumed her nursing career. She was a public health nurse for many years in the North and West ends of Winnipeg, working in Machray, Isaac Newton and Daniel McIntyre schools as well as in the community. She loved her work and the people she served with an open and generous heart. In 1967 Carolyn married Bill Waldie and they remained together for the next 46 years until his death in November 2013. They enjoyed travelling around the world and spent several winters in Palm Springs, California. Carolyn and Bill were for many years members of John Black Memorial United Church and also Knox United Church. Later on they attended Rowandale Baptist Church.
