Date of Passing: May 11, 2016
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemorySHIRLEY ROSE ZAMATIS It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Shirley Zamatis on May 11, 2016. She died peacefully at the Selkirk General Hospital, at the age of 80. Shirley will be lovingly remembered by her husband Pete; son Terry, daughter-in-law Connie; granddaughter Amanda; sister Sharon (Larry) Taylor, and nieces and nephews, Stacey and Curtis Benzick, Kristin, Kevin and Russell Taylor. She was predeceased by her parents Mary and Harry Benzick, brother Ross, and sister-in-law Ruth. Shirley was the eldest daughter of Mary and Harry and grew up on the family farm in the Petersfield area. In 1957, she married Pete Zamatis and they made their home in Petersfield. She raised their son Terry and helped Pete run his transfer business, even driving the truck when he broke his arm. For many years she ran the restaurant in the Petersfield hotel where people came from far and wide as much for the visit with Shirley as for the food. After retirement, she set off to explore the world with trips across Canada from coast to coast, the United States, New Zealand and Australia, travelling with dear friends and making many more along the way. Never one to sit still for long, Shirley kept busy packing minnows, floor curling, working at the Lily Pad, volunteering at the Petersfield Community Club, cooking breakfast at the store, coffee club at the hotel and community dances. In 2002, she received an award from the Premier of Manitoba in recognition of her many years of volunteer service. One of her greatest joys in life was the arrival of her granddaughter Amanda. Grandma Shirley was always looking forward to her next visit. In her last years, Shirley fought a courageous battle against kidney disease where she defied the odds until the end. The family wishes to thank Roberta and the staff of the Dialysis Unit in the Selkirk General Hospital for their loving care, and the staff of the Selkirk General Hospital for their personal care over the last months. Pallbearers will be Curtis Benzick, Larry Taylor, John MacKay, Ron Palmer, Craig Thidrickson and Marcel Lemire. Funeral services will be held at the Gilbart Funeral Home in Selkirk, MB on Monday, May 16 at 11:00 a.m. with lunch to follow in the Gilbart Reception Centre. A private family interment will take place after the luncheon. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Shirley's memory to the Kidney Foundation of Manitoba. We have many fond memories of Shirley. She loved flowers and I would try to bring her a bouquet from the garden when we would go for Saturday breakfast just to see her beautiful smile. She knew fried onions were a fav and always gave us extra with our meal. She was gentle, caring, and loving to everyone. Meeting and having the privilege of knowing her has been a highlight of our living in Petersfield. - Posted by: Bob and Cheryl Crane (friend) on: May 14, 2016
