EDITH MARY (GERRING) FISH April 13, 1918 May 17, 2016 It is with love, sadness in our hearts, and wonderful memories, that the family announces the passing of our mother, grandmother and great grandmother. After more than 98 years, Edith will be dearly missed. Edith was predeceased by her parents David and Martha Gerring, her loving husband Vernon; youngest daughter Karen Roman; sister Helen Riesberry; brothers, Tom and George Gerring; and grandson Darren Friesen. Edith is survived by her son, David (Linda) Fish from Lockport; daughters, Joan (Walter) Kaschor from Brandon, Barbara (Thomas) Thibault from Mayne Island, BC. and son-in-law Russ (Betty) Roman from Winnipeg; grandchildren, Lindsay (Jason) Marsh, Darci Fish, Ronald (Gail) McDonald, Brian McDonald, Heather (Shea) Stewart, Colin Thibault, Shaun (Carla) Thibault, Robyn Roman and Scott Roman; great-grandchildren, Corey Marsh, Ryan Marsh, Shae-lynne Stewart, Matthew Thibault and Lauren Thibault; and a very special niece, Eleanor Brownlee from Pender Island, BC. Edith was born in Kemnay, Manitoba. Growing up in a small community, she understood the love of family and benefits of working together; but Mom was also determined to do it her way she often called it being independent, not stubborn. Mom's desire to be independent led to her graduating with a Registered Nursing (RN) degree in May, 1942. She had gained her freedom, the ability to work, and her independence. She married her husband Vernon soon after, in August, 1942. During the war she worked at the Brandon Mental Hospital; part-time in the pharmacy and part-time nursing. After the war, Edith and Vern moved to Portage la Prairie where their son was born. The family then moved to Winnipeg where the girls were born. Mom worked as an RN in the Health Sciences Centre, Deer Lodge Centre and provided private nursing care. She also worked full time in a Winnipeg nursing home. She was determined to ensure that the family always had enough money for a merry Christmas and a summer holiday. Great times were had camping or swimming and fishing at Winnipeg Beach. Later when she retired from nursing, Mom and her young daughter Karen, started travelling around North America, usually on Greyhound bus tours. After several years of travelling, near and far, she realized that she knew more than the tour guides and could do a much better job. So, off she went to the Greyhound head office stating she could do a great job for them as a tour guide. They hired her on the spot. The family get together was a regular occurrence. Mom would always have two desserts, so we had a choice; but of course we always had to have both. Mom loved cats and always said if you get one, you have to get two. She was a very sociable person and loved to participate in events. Before her arthritis settled in, mom enjoyed knitting outfits for the grandchildren and cake decorating for special events. As life moved on, Mom moved to Sturgeon Creek 1 where she enjoyed the company of her table friends and many activities - shuffle board, whist, bocce ball, casino trips and weekly bingo outings. Mom also found enjoyment in reading, and doing sudoku puzzles- claiming it kept her mind sharp. The family would like to thank Dr. Gooi, Mike and staff at Sturgeon Creek 1, Home Care and Deer Lodge Centre staff for their support in Edith's later years. Flowers are gratefully declined, as mom would appreciate donations made in her memory to CancerCare Manitoba. Mom, we all loved you. You will be forever in our hearts. In keeping with mom's wishes, cremation has taken place. No funeral service will be held. Interment will be at Chapel Lawn with immediate family.
