KATHY ANNE HNATIW (WANAMAKER) 1962 - 2016 Kathy Anne Hnatiw (Wanamaker), 54, of Winnipeg, Manitoba, passed away on the evening of Saturday, May 14, 2016, after a courageous battle with lung cancer; surrounded by the ones she loved. Kathy was born on February 15, 1962 in Flin Flon, Manitoba, to Helen Wanamaker (nee Weiten) and the late Robert Wanamaker, as the youngest of four sisters. She graduated from Hapnot Collegiate in 1980, and shortly after moved to Winnipeg. In 1986, Kathy married Bastiaan (Bob) Nieuwkerk, of Selkirk, Manitoba and the two would welcome their daughter Alexis Dawn Nieuwkerk, in 1989. Kathy loved to attend her daughter's softball games, dance recitals and was a devoted stay-at-home mother. Kathy joined Y-Neighbours in the early 1990s; a group where stay-at-home mom's could meet and socialize; she would meet some of her closest friends through this community. Kathy and Bob would divorce, but continued to maintain a close friendship until her passing. On July 22, 2005, Kathy married Kirk Jerry Hnatiw, and through the next years they would build a home that Kathy was very proud of. Kathy and Kirk, along with her daughter, would share many amazing memories of trips, holidays, birthdays and summer barbeques. As the baby of the family, Kathy enjoyed a close relationship with her mother Helen, whom she visited regularly in Victoria, BC. Kathy was known for her sense of humour and her love of making others laugh, as well as her compassion and care for everyone she met. She was a brilliant woman who had a great passion for her career as a Corporate Risk Officer for Assiniboine Credit Union. She loved to decorate and shop, and had a knack for home design. Kathy was also an avid sports fan, and some of her favourite times were spent at home on football Sundays with her daughter and husband. Kathy is survived by her husband Kirk Hnatiw; daughter Alexis Nieuwkerk; mother Helen Wanamaker; sisters, Barbara Isaac (Barb), Eldeen Blair and Lori Wanamaker (Silvia); nieces, Andrea Babson and Courtney Johnson (Jamaal), as well as three great-nieces. Kathy's caring nature, sense of humour and friendship will also be greatly missed by her best friends, Michelle Hnatiw, Holly Carpick, Tammie Bradbury and Susan Thompson. "We'll be friends forever, won't we buddy? Even longer, love buddy." - Michelle Hnatiw "We will love you forever." - Kirk Hnatiw and Alexis Nieuwkerk A special thank you, from Kathy's family to the nurses and caregivers of Palliative Care Manitoba and the Palliative Care Unit in St. Boniface Hospital. The care and compassion you showed for Kathy went above and beyond anything we could have expected. We will always think of you all as Kathy's angels.
