Born: Mar 03, 1941
Date of Passing: Jun 06, 2016
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryEDWARD LEONARD ENGEN March 3, 1941 - June 6, 2016 It is with heavy hearts we announce the sudden passing of our beloved father, grandfather and friend at St. Boniface Hospital. Left to cherish his memory is his son Brian (Jan); daughter Katherine (Scott); grandchildren, Justin, Mitchell, Danica and Jean. He is also survived by his brother Norm Engen (Kelowna, BC) and sister Martine Lathlin (The Pas). Ed was predeceased by his wife Jean and his parents, Emma and Aaron Engen, of Cormorant, Manitoba. Ed loved his wife Jean of 51 years and missed her deeply. She passed in December of last year. His son, daughter and grandchildren were the joy of his life. Ed loved the Jets, curling, reading, travelling, golfing and his veggie and flower gardens. He also volunteered in many events that took place in Winnipeg. He was the president of the Riverview Garden Society for many years and made a beautiful flower garden with a picnic table and seating where you could enjoy the beautiful surroundings. Ed enjoyed going to Brian and Jan's lake house at Husavik. He would go for walks on the beach with his grandchildren to collect shells and rocks. He would sit on the deck and watch the wildlife and birds and if anyone asked him what kind of bird it was he would say, "It's a LBJ" (a little brown job). He also spent time at Katherine and Scott's vacation home at Sandy Hook. Ed and Jean (his granddaughter) would cruise around on the gold cart and then come in and raid the fridge for snacks. In the evening they would sit on the veranda and enjoy the sunsets. Ed was very handy, as was evident by the many built projects around his house and his children's homes. He built beautiful bird houses, Adirondack chairs, matching tables; to many things to mention. Ed worked for the Provincial Government for 32 years. He started his career in The Pas as a wildlife technician in 1963. He transferred to Winnipeg in 1966 to work in the animal control program. He became a technician for the east region of Manitoba and then was appointed Eastern Fur Manager in 1975. He remained in that position until he retired in 1996. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 18, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at Thomson "In the Park" Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Blvd. The family would like to thank the paramedics and the St. Boniface Hospital emergency staff for their prompt response and valiant efforts; their professionalism was noted and appreciated. Many thanks. THOMSON "IN THE PARK" 204-925-1120 Condolences may be sent to www.thomsoninthepark.com

I offer my condolences to family and friends for the loss of Ed in their lives. Ed's memory will live on in our hearts as that of an intelligent, kind and gentle man, one with a subtle sense of humour. I'll remember Ed as a good friend, one selflessly dedicated to his life's work making life a little better for the people he served; and also as the hand who fed us so well on our occasional trips into the wilderness. When I first heard of Ed's passing, strangely, what came to mind were a few lines from an old Irish song: "...I will ask my God to make my heaven in that dear land across the Irish sea". But, for Ed it would be: "...I will ask my God to make my heaven in that dear land across Tramping Lake", the place he loved, the place which stands as a monument to his life's work, and that of his co-workers, trapper education. - Posted by: Claude St-Jacques (Associate) on: Jun 15, 2016

Ed was a great person to work with and as his supervisor in the eastern region he was always fun to be with. An innovative person and a great cook. I have many memories of working with him as a colleague and some that come to mind were the many years we tagged caribou at Sasaginnigak lake for 3 weeks very July for about 10 years. The memories will remain my friend and a job well done - Posted by: Dr. Vince Crichton (Supervisoro when in Eastern Region) on: Jun 13, 2016

ED was a cheerful and fun person with whom to work. His gentle good nature and humour was good for the team, not only in the DNR regions but in head office as well. Gone too soon. "Well done good and faithful servant!" - Posted by: Ross Thompson (Co-Worker) on: Jun 12, 2016
