DOREEN GIRLING (nee HARRISON) After a sudden illness, Doreen Girling passed away peacefully on June 14, 2016, at age 91. She will be lovingly remembered by her husband of 68 years, Les, two daughters, Cynthia (Ron) and Linda (Tim), and one son, Bill (Linda). She also leaves behind six grandchildren: Julia, Kim, Cameron, Kate, Leslie, and Mark. She was predeceased by her sister, Norma. Doreen was born and raised in Winnipeg where she met Les, a dashing young Flight Lieutenant, and they were married in 1948. Doreen was an exemplary mother, help-mate and home-maker. In addition to providing a loving environment for her family, Doreen did all the big and little things at home that helped Les to develop his career that grew into a successful interior design business. While growing up, the family enjoyed special times at the Jessica Lake cottage. When the kids left the nest, Les and Doreen built their dream log home near Bird's Hill Park. Doreen was also very proud of the fact that her children developed successful careers in their chosen professions. Doreen was legendary for her cooking and gardening skills. Her gardens spoke to a deep knowledge of plants, a designer's eye and relentless tending. Throughout her carefully organized life, Doreen found time for friends, clubs and public service. Doreen had regular lunch dates with pals from Gordon Bell High School, she was a life member at Niakawa Country Club, a member of the St. Vital Curling Club, and participated in the Women's Canadian Club. For decades she attended the Winnipeg Symphony, Manitoba Theatre Centre and had a special interest in the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, where she held season tickets for over 50 years. She loved to volunteer Fort Whyte Alive, where she especially enjoyed welcoming visitors at the reception desk. When the grandchildren came, Doreen cleared her schedule to become the doting Grandma that they have loved and cherished. As her grandchildren grew up she followed them closely and gave them all unconditional love. Modest to the core, Doreen was all about celebrating the accomplishments of others. She downplayed her strength of character, tenacity and determination to do everything to the best of her ability. A private family service has been held in her honour. Those wishing to make a donation in Doreen's name may consider the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, Fort Whyte Alive or a charity of one's choice.
