Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryDR. ANDREW T. KARSGAARD Dr. Andrew T. Karsgaard, born September 8, 1917, died peacefully on June 14, 2016 at Grace Hospital in Winnipeg. Andrew was an extraordinary man who lived a life of faith in Jesus Christ and touched the lives of many. A gifted speaker with an amazing memory for details, he entertained people with personal stories of life in pre-partition India, starting a hospital in the rugged Himalayan foothills in northern Pakistan and travelling around the globe as the medical director of TEAM Missions. He was a man of great personal integrity and vision who through faith accomplished much, always giving glory to God. Andrew was a compassionate and humble man who often thought of others. In addition to his commitment to his family and involvement in his church, he combined his love of travel with photography. He was an engaging conversationalist, explained in part by his extensive reading on various subjects. He loved his wife and family deeply and was deeply loved in return. Andrew grew up in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan before obtaining degrees in science from the University of B.C. and medicine from the University of Manitoba. After marrying Olive Pierce in 1944, they moved to Tofino on the west coast of Vancouver Island where Andrew provided medical services to the small fishing village. Andrew had felt at a young age the call to be a medical missionary, and in 1946 Andrew and Olive joined The Scandinavian Alliance Mission (later to become TEAM) and travelled by ship to what is now Pakistan. After serving for five years at the United Presbyterian hospital in Taxila on the plains, Andrew began the work of founding Bach Christian Hospital in the foothills of the Himalayas, a vitally important facility that continues to provide much needed medical care in northern Pakistan. After serving in Pakistan for sixteen years, the family returned to Winnipeg in 1962 due to Olive's health. Andrew joined the Winnipeg Clinic, completed a residency in ophthalmology and operated at the Misericordia and General hospitals. He also served as the Medical Director of TEAM, travelling to mission fields on every inhabited continent, and later served on TEAM's board. Andrew will be deeply missed and fondly remembered as a man of faith who loved others and lived a life of service to God. He was predeceased by his loving wife Olive (nee Pierce), brothers Roy and Gordon, son David and grandson Dirk. Left to mourn his passing are his children Louise (Gil), Beth (Erwin), Lynne and Paul (Janet); grandchildren Andrew (Stacey), Phillip, Josh (Stephanie), Ilse, Nathan, Rachel (Rick), Heather, Mark (Christy), Jonathan, and Kaitlyn; great grandchildren Beatrix, Tristan, Drew and Logan, along with many other relatives and friends. The family would like to thank the staff at the Grace Hospital for their wonderful care and expressions of appreciation for the man Andrew was. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made for the Bach Christian Hospital to T.E.A.M., Airways P.O. Box 56030 Calgary AB T2E 8K5 or online at team.org (for Cdn or US donors). A memorial service will be held at Bethesda Church, 1350 Grant Avenue, Winnipeg on Tuesday, June 21, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. For those who wish to sign the online Guest Book please visit our website. Saw him as a child for my eyes which were pretty terrible. Always a kind and gentle guy. He helped so many people including my brother and myself. - Posted by: Ryan (Patient) on: Nov 26, 2018

Dr. Andrew Karsgaard was a man I will never forget! As a young boy growing up in Winnipeg, Manitoba, I first met him when he returned from the mission field and would often enjoy dinner at my family home in River Heights. My father & mother (Fred & Ruth Lang were good friends of Dr. Karsgaard, so as children we got to know him well. He always had a smile and a kind word for we children and as I matured I came to profoundly respect this humble but extremely accomplished man. Later I was unfortunate to experience serious and significant damage to my right eye. Early one morning in Winnipeg General Hospital I awoke to see (from my left eye) the friendly and smiling face of Dr. Karsgaard. It was believed I would lose my right eye and have it replaced with a glass prototype. Dr. Karsgaard immediately went to work and approximately a week later my vision slowly began to improve. Now some 50 years later I enjoy 20/20 vision in that "damaged" eye which I readily attribute to the power of much prayer and Dr. Karsgaard's steady and experienced hand. When visiting Winnipeg several years ago (June 30, 2013), I was fortunate to catch up with Dr. Karsgaard on sunny Sunday morning at Bethesda Church in Winnipeg. We enjoyed a great conversation and when thanked again, Dr. Karsgaard humbly told me “it was nothing” and carried on. This was the true expression of the man’s inner soul. A man of much experience helping others, healing the sick and attending to the souls of so many both here and literally around the world. Andrew Karsgaard, I will never forget you and look forward to catching up once again one day soon. - Posted by: Douglas Lang (Friend) on: Jun 19, 2016
