FREDERICK (RICK) CHARLES MCKAY April 15, 1948 - May 24, 2016 We, neighbours and friends, are saddened to announce the sudden and untimely passing of Rick at age 68. Rick was born the only child of Sadie and Frederick McKay. He spoke proudly of his father's background in Scotland and career in Transair Aviation. Rick always recognized every plane flying overhead! After his father's death in 1991, Rick took exceptional care of his mother until her passing in 2009. Rick became a teacher and retired from the St. James School Division. His life was full of community interests. He was a Shriner, member of Good Sam's RV Club, served on the Board of the Snowdon Condo, and liked planning and cooking for such things as Grey Cup parties. Following his move to Meadowbrook Villas, Sanford, he became friends with many as he walked his little West Highland Terrier (Dudley) around the community. He served on the Condo Board as Property Chair for many years and could be seen loaning equipment or helping neighbours with projects. More recently, Rick joined the Winnipeg Trap and Skeet Club, serving as Treasurer. It was through this association and his friendship with Ken Wight, that he enjoyed several pheasant shooting outings. A memorial service will be held for Rick at Chapel Lawn, 4000 Portage Ave. at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, June 29. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society. Condolences & Memories (6 entries)

  • Rick was a good man and a great friend who I will miss dearly. He was easy-going and so thoughtful. Cheerio, Rick. I will think of you every April! - Posted by: Lori Lynn Bachewich (Friend and former colleague) on: Jul 02, 2016

  • My time with him was short, (3 years at Spring Valley Jr. high) He was a fantastic teacher, and he helped me pull out of a slump or two. Not just a great teacher, but a kind caring man. It was so long ago, the memories are weak, but I seem to remember he also enjoyed racing on the ice track in his car. Condolences to those who have lost. - Posted by: David Williams (Student) on: Jun 29, 2016

  • I enjoyed teaching with Rick. He was a good teacher who understood his students. He was resourceful and intelligent. I remember one Hallowe'en school party where he dressed as Cpt. Bligh of HMS Bounty. He was the hit of the party. So long, Rick. It was good knowing you. - Posted by: Barry Campbell (teacher friend at Brooklands Jr. Hi. in the '90s.) on: Jun 28, 2016
