MABEL MARY DECOCK May 3, 1930 - July 1, 2016 On a beautiful, sunny Canada Day morning, surrounded by the love of her family, our wife and mother passed peacefully into the arms of the Lord. Mabel was born in Medika, Manitoba, the second youngest of 11 children born to Wasyl and Mary Chodachek. Mom left home at the age of 16 and worked in Winnipeg at Eaton's. While at a dance in Lorette, Mom met Dad and the rest was history. They dated, married on Mom's birthday on May 3, 1952, and lived on their dairy farm in St. Anne, MB. They moved to Selkirk in 1965, and along the way they raised four children. While in Selkirk Mom worked at Southview Bakery, and then at Safeway where she made many life long friends Mom was an inspiration to us all, her positive attitude was infectious, and her giving and loving ways were experienced by all. Mom always had the saying, "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all", and she held that true to her word. If we laughed she laughed with us, if we cried she cried with us, but most of all she was always there for us. She was so proud of her family and all their accomplishments, and always instilled the importance of strength in family and friends. She taught us all how to make her tasty recipes of perogies, cabbage rolls, pies, soups and anything else that we loved. Her door was always open, and your plate was always full, and when you were leaving you had the Tupperware container in hand. One of Mom's proudest moments was learning how to swim at the age of 68, because she was always scared of the water. Mom loved garage sales, and would help anyone out if they were having one. She loved her Whist nights and the bingo nights wherever they were being held. She was a member of the Selkirk Legion and the Over 60 Club, and a proud long time member of the CWL at the Notre Dame Church in Selkirk, where she attended for the last 50 or so years. Mabel leaves to mourn her passing, her best friend and loving husband Ralph, of 64 years, along with her brother Andy; her sons Ron (Ronna) and Jeff, her daughters Susan (Allan) Stutsky and Sandra (Paul) Starodub; her precious grandchildren, Tracy, Roberta (Derek), Brad, Celeste, David (Chelsea), Samantha (Jon), Blair, Lindsay, Andrew, and great-grandchildren Calista, Quinlan, Ivy and Madison. Thank you to Dr. Zoppa, whom Mom loved, and to the staff at the Selkirk Hospital for the wonderful care given to our mom, and to Wendy for always looking out for "Our Mabel". Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, July 6 at 11:00 a.m. at the Notre Dame Church, 269 Jemima St., Selkirk, MB. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Star's Air Ambulance, Alberta or Manitoba. Where one day they may save your life, or the life of your child.
