Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryJACK (JOHN F.) MAVINS March 3, 1932 - July 3, 2016 Jack passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 3, 2016 at the age of 84. He will be forever missed by Yvonne, his loving wife of 60 years, sons Randy (Lynne) and Colin (Virginia), daughter Janine (Murray), grandchildren Derrick (Robin), Dominique and Tristan, brother David (Val), sisters-in-law, Pat and Anne, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Jack was born and raised in Winnipeg. In 1974, Jack and Yvonne and their three children left city living behind for 40 acres of farmland near Anola. With the help of family and friends, they built their country home, lovingly dubbed "The House that Jack Built". Jack had a rewarding career with the Manitoba Telephone System (MTS), retiring in 1987 on his 55th birthday. The highlight of Jack's career was in 1986 when he spent six months in New Zealand working as a Network Management Consultant to the New Zealand Post Office. Jack was very mechanically inclined and loved to restore antique cars, a hobby he continued to enjoy throughout his life. He was a charter (1960) and honorary life (1988) member of the Manitoba Classic and Antique Auto Club. In 2009, in recognition of his long service to the hobby, Jack was inducted into the Manitoba Motor Sports Hall of Fame. Genealogy was another favourite pastime and it led to 11 trips to England and three to Australia and New Zealand in search of the family history. In the course of their research, they published three family history books and met many newly found relatives. In his retirement, Jack spent countless hours volunteering with the Rural Municipality of Springfield. A founding member of the Springfield Municipal Cemetery Committee, Treasurer of the Anola District Museum Board for 32 years and founder of the Springfield Municipal Archives in 2006, he worked to preserve local history. Jack was presented with the 2014 Lieutenant Governor's Award for Historical Preservation and Promotion. A celebration of Jack's life will be held on Monday, July 11, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at Oakbank United Church, 582 Balsam Crescent, Oakbank, MB. Reception to follow at the church. Flowers are gratefully declined. Should family and friends wish, donations may be made in Jack's memory to the War Amps or a charity of one's choice. www.seasonsfunerals.ca

I met Jack and Yvonne Mavins in 1961 and always respected their teamwork and leadership in what was good for the old car hobby as well as for the members and their families. I volunteered under them to help put out the Surmount Reporter and it was a huge job done well and done in a jiffy. That prepared me to do similar work throughout my career. I spoke with Jack countless times but I'll always remember his straight answers and best advice. He told me,"Always remember that when you're working with anything electrical, that cleanliness is next to Godliness" and then he paused, "like anything else in life." His word was gold. He was a real capital m Man. I was lucky to know him. - Posted by: Doug Sparkes (Friend and admirer) on: Jul 09, 2016
