THE HON. RAYMOND HAMILTON HARRIS B.A., LLB. 1926-2016 On Friday, July 15, 2016, Raymond Hamilton Harris, beloved husband and best friend of Beth, died peacefully at home. Ray is survived by his wife Beth Harris (née Brennand), his sister-in-law Susan Brennand, Beth's cousin Catherine and her husband Al Macatavish and family, special nieces and nephews, plus many other family and friends in Canada and the USA. Ray was born March 14, 1926 in Wilberforce, Ohio, the middle son of Raymond and Marjorie Harris. His family moved to Canada when he was very young and settled in Winnipeg's North End. He attended Machray School and St. John's High School. After leaving school for five years, he attended United College (now the University of Winnipeg) to continue his education, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in 1952. He then entered the University of Manitoba Law School and graduated in 1956. After taking his call to the bar, he commenced the practice of law with David Levin, later Levin and Harris and finally Levin, Soronow and Harris. In 1972 he was appointed to the Juvenile and Family Court firstly as a part time judge, then full time in 1974. When the Juvenile and Criminal divisions were integrated, he continued to sit until his retirement in 1997. He was reappointed as a part time judge and served until 2000 when illness forced him to resign. He loved being a judge and considered this his dream job. During these years he was very active in many organizations and associations including: Indian and Metis Friendship Centre, Citizenship Council of Manitoba, Community Welfare Council, MacDonald Youth Hostel, Manitoba Bar Association, Canadian Bar Association, University of Winnipeg Alumni Association, University of Winnipeg Board of Regents, Manitoba Provincial Judges Association, Canadian Association of Provincial Court Judges. He was also a marriage commissioner for the Province of Manitoba. Ray and Beth were married for almost 56 years and enjoyed a wonderful social life with a wide circle of friends. They loved to travel and visited many interesting places. Although Ray suffered from declining health these last 16 years, he was wonderfully cared for by Dr. Ian Maharaj and the WRHA nurses and aides. Without their support and help, Ray would not have been able to remain in his own home. Heartfelt thanks to all. Cremation has taken place. A private interment is planned. A celebration of Ray's life will take place at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 26, 2016 at The Gates on Roblin Reception Centre, 6945 Roblin Blvd., Headingley, MB. Flowers are gratefully declined. Should friends desire, donations in Ray's memory may be made to the University of Winnipeg Foundation, 901-491 Portage Ave., Winnipeg, MB, R3B 9Z9 or to a charity of your choice. Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • I first met Ray in 1952 when he used to come over to Balmoral Hall and helped me with Math (and I did pass ). He was the one who listened to all my troubles with my various boyfriends and always gave me good advice....I have kept most of his letters , which I read (with tears) periodically. We disagreed on three things (and it became a running joke over the years) : I was a St. John's College gal and he was a United College guy....2) He was a Liberal and I am a Conservative, 3) I was and am an Anglican and he was not!! I will miss Ray more than words can say - My three sons loved Ray and my middle son, Eric, went into Law and one of the reasons was Ray Harris. In his letters he told me about Beth (but he called her something else, which I do not recall) until it became serious. Without that angel, Beth, his life would have been very different....Beth looked after him for so many years and until his death she was there with, and for him. God Bless you Beth -- I know of no one else that would have done all you did and it certainly gave me peace knowing you were looking after my beloved friend. R.I.P. my dearest friend and may all the angels in heaven watch over you always. - Posted by: Jill Dunbar (Long time Friend -- since 1952.) on: Jul 30, 2016

  • Sincere condolences to Ray's family. It was an honour and privilege to have worked with Ray at Levin, Soronow & Harris from June 1971 till 1972. He was well respected by his peers and staff. He will be missed. - Posted by: Sheena Graham (nee Thomspon) (Secretary) on: Jul 23, 2016
