WALTER EDWARD JOPKA Wally passed away peacefully on July 31, 2016, surrounded by his family after a short battle with cancer. Born in Ethelbert, MB, on August 8, 1941, Wally grew up in Grandview, MB. Predeceased by his father Steve, sister Joyce and brother John; he is survived by his mother Olga and sister Marlene. In 1961 Wally started what would become over a 40 year career with the Hudson Bay and Northwest Company which saw him serve in numerous managerial roles and took him across the country. In 1962 while stationed in Wabowden, MB, he met the love of his life, Verla Little. A loving marriage of over 50 years blessed them with four children, Karren, Darren (Pat), Kathy (Levi), Karla (Derek); eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Wherever he went, Wally was always an active member of the community serving as a coach to countless teams, a member of the Knights of Columbus and with the church. An avid sports fan, he loved golf, curling, hockey, football, floor curling, shuffling and, most of all, baseball. He enjoyed travel and we cherish the many family vacations which always ended up near a Major League ballpark. In retirement he and Verla became Canadian snowbirds, travelling each winter through the southern US, finally settling in Weslaco, Texas, where they have enjoyed 17 years at the Pine to Palm trailer park. But most of all, Dad was a loving father and was never happier than spending time with family around the dinner table. A celebration of his life will be on Saturday, August 6, at 9:30 a.m. at Mary Mother of the Church, 85 Kirkbridge Drive, Winnipeg. In lieu of flowers, please donate to CancerCare Manitoba.
