ALMA BEATRICE BLACK (BRENTNELL) August 13, 1959 - August 1, 2016 Peacefully and with deep regret we announce the passing of Alma Black with her family by her side on August 1, at the age of 56, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, just shy of her 57th birthday. Left to mourn are husband Victor Black; sons, William Burke and Paul Burke; daughter Robin Burke; step-children Sean Black, Leanne Morison (Matt), Sheldon Black and Jason Black; grandchildren, Austin, Jemma, Jordan, Damien, Aiden, and Devin; mother Erima Brentnell; brother Carl Brentnell (Debbie); sister Ellen Sjoberg (Dennis); and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her father Harvey Brentnell in 2014. At an early age Alma became hearing impaired and was enrolled in Saskatchewan School for the Deaf where she graduated and formed many lifelong friendships which have spread throughout Canada and several States. Determined to further her education she then moved to Winnipeg in 1977. Alma was enrolled in Red River Community College where she graduated with several diplomas in computer sciences. Alma moved onto a career with Air Canada, Via Rail and New Flyer Industries before leaving due to health reasons in 2011. Alma was a very strong and determined woman with a work ethic that would be difficult for most people to surpass. For many years she held two jobs at the same time, working day shift and also night shift at Canada Revenue Agency. Alma continued this practice for more than seven years. Alma had a zest for Christmas second to none and lived the holidays to their fullest. She loved pets, especially cats, and travelling, she would have travelled the world if time allowed. She had many memorable trips to Las Vegas, Arizona, Mexico, and a boat cruise with various island destinations. During her final months she made 10 trips to Toronto where she was enrolled in an immunotherapy clinical trial program at Princess Margaret Hospital for ovarian cancer. Alma was a very proud individual with Saskatchewan always being her home. Any time she encountered people interested in deaf culture she would stop and take time to promote deaf culture and ASL. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Princess Margaret Hospital UHN, 610 University Avenue, Toronto, ON, M5G 2M9. A Service of Remembrance will be held on Monday, August 8, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at Green Acres Funeral Home, Highway 1 East at Navin Road, Winnipeg. GREEN ACRES Funeral Home and Cemetery (204) 222-3241 Condolences may be sent to www.greenacresfuneralhome.com
