SHIRLEY JUNE GILHULY In the early morning of August 1, 2016 Shirley June Gilhuly (nee Alexander) went to be with the love of her life and soulmate Dick. Shirley was born and grew up in Minnedosa, Manitoba, the third youngest in a family of 12. Shirley and her younger sisters, Jean and Donna were very close. Shirley loved sports and played as much as she could growing up ! specifically high jumping, baseball and skating. As a child Shirley was precocious and told us of her many antics that always seemed to get her in trouble. Her most infamous was when she skipped school with a friend to take a train to Winnipeg. Shirley and Dick were married in Minnedosa on November 4, 1950 and moved to Brandon where they began their family. They had five children in seven years. The family moved to Winnipeg and Shirley was able to work in the banking business (Canada Trust and Royal Bank) for many years to help support the family. She worked in the evening when the kids were old enough for school. Upon retirement Shirley travelled to Africa with Dick where he worked with the Canadian International Development Agency. During this time Shirley had to go back to basics making her own bread, working around the daily power outages. Dick and Shirley used time off to travel to Europe and Kenya where Shirley enjoyed the shopping. She also enjoyed trips to the U.S. with her sister Donna and husband Vic. Shirley had big ideas for home renovations. She always had the belief that getting rid of a wall here or there was not a big deal and how difficult can it really be to move the shed over the fence and into the backyard. In later years Shirley liked to garden from her recliner while looking out the window. We are grateful that Shirley's pain and suffering is over and that she is now with Dick once again. Those Shirley leaves to remember her are her sons, Rick (Patti) and Rod (Colleen); daughters, Sherrill, Jill (Rob) and Penny; and her sister Donna. Shirley's grandchildren Ian, Connor, Marc, Alex, Greg, Reilly, Shane, Dana, Jeff and Aidan will also miss their Nana. Shirley will also be missed by her nieces and nephews. We would like to thank the palliative nurses who took care of Shirley the last few months of her life. Cremation has taken place and as per Shirley's wishes there will be no formal services. Friends and family are invited to share in a celebration of Shirley's life on Wednesday, August 17 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at 49 Havelock Avenue, Winnipeg, MB.
