LAURA E. STEEL (nee BUCZEK) Peacefully, with family by her side, we announce the passing of our beloved mother, wife, sister, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Laura E. Steel (nee Buczek), on Thursday, August 18, 2016. She is cherished and will be sadly missed by her sister Helen; her children, Sandra Magnus (Dean), John Steel (Kathleen), and Jo-Anne Penston; her grandchildren, Deanne (Brant), Derek (Leah), Dylan, John (Heather), Gregory, Jennifer (Dave), Daniel, and Jessie (Brin); and her great-grandchildren, Andrew, Zachary, and Scarlett. Laura was predeceased by the love of her life, John (Jack) Steel, in 2006, her brother Ed in 2016, and her son-in-law Brian Penston in 2015. Laura was born in Toronto, ON, on April 30, 1931. She met Jack in Hamilton and they were married in Winnipeg on October 6, 1951. Laura and Jack made a home in Tuxedo on Kelvin Boulevard for nearly 50 years where they raised their three children. Laura loved working alongside Jack at the order desk at Hilton Insulation & Supply Ltd., and enjoyed travelling the world with him. She also spent many years working as a dental assistant in the Dental Arts Building. Laura was an active supporter of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, and was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Winnipeg. Mom was proud of her children's accomplishments in life and loved her family. She enjoyed various pastimes including homemade cooking, gardening, showing dogs, knitting, and especially loved spending time with family and friends at their cottage in the Village of Dunnottar, near Whytewold, MB. Reverend Bruce Miles, a longtime family friend, will officiate at a private celebration of Mom's life. The family wishes to extend special thanks to the staff and friends that Mom met and loved along her journey; The Rosewood, where she resided for five years, and most recently The Simkin Centre, where staff and residents became her extended family including Dr. Tim Ross. We would also like to extend a special thank you to all the staff on the 4th floor of Victoria Hospital. In lieu of flowers please send a donation to the Alzheimer Society at 10-120 Donald St., Winnipeg, MB, R3C 4G2 or a charity of your choice.
