Born: Mar 21, 1924
Date of Passing: Aug 31, 2016
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryRALPH RICHARD LUCAS March 21, 1924 - August 31, 2016 LAST CALL THE BELL HAS CHIMED 3 TIMES RALPH IS HOME SAFE Ralph passed away August 31, 2016, at Deer Lodge Centre. If ever a man was born to be a firefighter it was Dad and a fellow firefighter once declared "if one was to picture what a firefighter should look like, it is you". He retired after 39 years as District Chief in 1988. He was dedicated to the job he loved and was well known for his pranks, good nature and his witty and often inappropriate comments. He loved to tell his stories and his memory of events was astonishing right up to his last days at 92+ years. Dad was the youngest of eight children. His parents immigrated from Scotland and he grew up in West Kildonan where he met the love of his life and best friend Patricia. They wed at 19 years of age and never left each other's side until the passing of Mom in 2001. He missed her dearly. Left to mourn are Brian (Bernice), Ron (Sheila), Wayne (Norma) and Martin (Jill), eight grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. Dad and Mom's journey through life included building a cottage at Star Lake where the family spent many enjoyable summers. They ran a business for years and he taught his sons the value of hard work as they worked alongside him. They subdivided and sold land in Stony Mountain and built two homes there. In their later years they drove a motor home to winter in Mazatlan Mexico where they met many wonderful new friends including the locals. He became known as the candy man and that nickname followed him to Deer Lodge where staff frequently dropped in for a visit and a sweet. A gravesite ceremony was held and Ralph is again at the side of his beloved Pat. May they both rest in peace with the angels. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Deer Lodge Centre Foundation, 2109 Portage Ave, Winnipeg, MB R3J 0L3 or the Firefighters Burn Fund, 303-83 Garry Street, Winnipeg, MB R3C 4J9. Ralph was one of the true originals. 100% firefighter and proud of it. I first met him at Station 7. As a young firefighter learning my job, I looked to men like Ralph to teach me. His love for what he did and for the people he served molded me and taught me how to stay alive. Only other firefighters will understand what the gift Ralph gave those of us he mentored meant. Thanks, Cap. My condolences to Ron and his family. An honorable life well lived by an honorable man. - Posted by: Scott Miner (Collegue) on: Sep 07, 2016

I was very sad to hear of Ralph's passing.... he was always so fun to be around always telling jokes, Always giving me candies... always talking political stuff about the news. He was a happy man who spoke of his family with true love. He is dearly missed by all the staff.... Much love to all the family <3 - Posted by: Donna (Hca at deer lodge) on: Sep 05, 2016

It's with a heavy heart I'm thinking about my Ident colleague and great friend, Marty Lucas - and his family, who just lost his dad a few days ago. Marty's dad, Ralph, served the people of Winnipeg as a firefighter for a great many years. A truly noble life spent in service to others. Our sincere and deepest condolences to the Lucas family on the loss of their father, grandfather and great-grandfather. - Posted by: Bob Russell (Friend of Martin Lucas ) on: Sep 05, 2016

Terribly sorry to hear about Ralph, he was one of the last remaining founding members of the Star Lake Block 7 families. Still miss hearing his stories and the infectious 'Lucas' laugh and sense of humour. Ralph had a heart to match his size. We are sad he is gone, but happy that he is again laughing with Pat. Good times and good memories. Our sincere condolences. - Posted by: Bryan and Edna Blunt (Cottage Neighbors & Friends) on: Sep 04, 2016

As a rookie I had the opportunity to work for Chief Lucas on a day change. As a Captain he was larger than life, if you didn't know of him you sure got a quick lesson and did not want to disappoint him, or fail his crew. We'll I did make a mistake charging the hydrant without orders from the pump operator. Cool hand Luke did not berate me in the field or in the station, merely asked me "Why". I did not need to provide my reason because the District Chief stood up and said that he ordered me to. Captain Lucas turned what could have been an uncomfortable exchange into true learning experience. Chief Lucan Thank You for all you've done a true Leader! - Posted by: Stephen Sumka (Firefighter) on: Sep 03, 2016
