VERA MAUD SHERMAN (nee YOUNG) October 27, 1921 - September 2, 2016 Peacefully on Friday, September 2 at Concordia Hospital Mother passed into eternal rest at the age of 94 years. Mother was predeceased by her husband of 46 years, Thomas Nile Sherman in January 1987, two brothers (Second World War) and two sisters. She is survived by her five children, Gerald, Chris, Wilfred (Heather), Viola (Doug Wiley) and Dorian; granddaughter Jennifer (Dean Kachurowski, and great-granddaughter Tosha Sherman. Mother immigrated to Canada as a War Bride January 15, 1945 with her first child. She settled in Erwood, Saskatchewan where her husband was farming. After they moved to a few different locations in northeastern Saskatchewan and northwestern Manitoba they finally settled in Winnipeg where the last four children were born. Mother held various jobs related to the Health Care field. She started out at Deer Lodge Hospital in the late 1950s and worked at Grace Hospital, St. Amant Centre, Municipal Hospital (Riverview Health Centre) and finally with the nursing program at Red River College. Mother devoted many hours to St. John Ambulance and was made a Serving Sister in October 1979. Mother was a proud member of Confidence Rebekah Lodge No. 40 with 37 years of service and Stonewall Odd Fellows Lodge No. 49. She served as a District Deputy President and a District Deputy Grand Master with the lodges. She was a member of St. George's Anglican Church - Transcona and served on the Altar Guild for many years looking after the linens. The last few years have restricted her activities but she managed to stay at home and enjoy her cats Muffy, Pixie and Miss Molly. The family would like to thank the staff at Concordia Hospital for the care provided to Mother for her short stay in the hospital. Funeral Service is being held on Thursday, September 8 at 1:00 p.m. at St. George's Anglican Church, 321 Pandora Avenue West. Reception to follow. Interment to follow at Chapel Lawn Memorial Garden. Flowers gratefully declined, memorial donations may be made to St. George Anglican Church - Transcona or the Odd Fellow and Rebekah Memorial Eye Foundation, 4025 Roblin Blvd., Winnipeg, MB.
