ERNIE HARSANT With overwhelming sadness and heartache, we announce the passing of Ernie Harsant on September 6, 2016 at the age of 62. He leaves to mourn in his passing, his wife of 40 years, Renée; and the joy of his life, his son, Tyler (Edina). He also leaves his sister Sheila Lavallier (Gunter) of Kelwona, B.C., his sister, Mary Hill (Jack), his sister Carole Bardwell (Bill); and his brother Ted (Linda). Dear to his heart were also his nephews, Jason Bardwell, Jonathan and Paul Buccini; as well as numerous other nieces and nephews and many friends and colleagues. Upon graduating from the Respiratory Therapy program in 1984 he received the Fisher Scientific Award for Academic Excellence, the George Trudel Medical Company Award, the highest standing in Manitoba, and the Gold Medal for the highest standing in Canada on the Canadian Registry Exam. Until his illness prevented him from doing so, he was employed at Seven Oaks General Hospital as a Respiratory Therapist for 26 years. He previously worked at the St. Boniface Hospital, Kelowna General Hospital and occasionally worked at the Grace Hospital, as well as with the Transport Team and Global Air, transporting patients worldwide. His work took him to China, Japan, Iceland, Turkey, Sweden, Mexico, Puerto Rico, the Middle East and many other interesting destinations. Ernie had an outstanding intellect and enjoyed thought-provoking discussions and debates with his son, wife, friends and colleagues on a continuous basis. He was a kind, caring and selfless individual who always put the welfare of others ahead of his own. He had a tremendous respect and love for animals and saved numerous stray cats while building structures for them to keep warm during the bitter winter months. Though no time was idle for Ernie, during his spare time he enjoyed listening to intellectual lectures, modifying computers and electronics, and was a self-taught electrician, plumber, carpenter, mechanic and handyman. No task or job was too great for him to undertake and he did so with much thought, planning, research and skill. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory can be made to D'Arcy's A.R.C., or Craig Street Cats. Service will be held at Desjardins Funeral Chapel, 357 Des Meurons Street, on Friday, September 9, 2016 at 7:00 p.m. with Monseigneur Comeau officiating. I never saw Buddy for least 20+ years since I visited last in the Maples at his home. We use to go drinking at a local pub, share some laughs, reminisce on childhood memories. What a shame.. R.I.P Ernie, see ya on the other side dude. - Posted by: PeeWee (Old friend) on: Aug 07, 2018

My deepest sympathy to you Renee and your family. My thoughts and prayers are with you during this very difficult time. I did not know your husband but I know how much he meant to you. Look after yourself and take care. - Posted by: Janice Eisbrenner (Previous co-worker of Renee) on: Sep 23, 2016

I worked with Ernie for many decades and he was a most respected, skilled, experienced RT and often challenged the status quo. Ernie, you will be hard to replace, and I am sending my deepest condolences to your family. - Posted by: Anne Wolkenstein (Co-worker SBGH then SOGH) on: Sep 13, 2016

As a long term co worker of Ernie's, although from another department , I can say that Ernie was extremely well liked and highly respected among his working peers. Ernie was very popular among staff throughout the hospital regardless of what department others were employed in , as working positions were not important to Ernie as he was friendly to all staff. I can certainly offer the opinion that the loss of Ernie has shaken the senior working staff quite badly and has impacted upon people quite intensely. I'm certain that Ernie set a working template within the Respiratory Department for other fellow department members to follow as he would have been an ideal mentor for new incoming RT staff. The loss of Ernie has truly impacted upon the working staff of the hospital and he will be truly missed and remembered. Rest easy, Ernie. - Posted by: Dave Carnochan (Co worker) on: Sep 09, 2016

I only knew Ernie for the last few years when I started working at Seven Oaks, but I really enjoyed his company. He was opinionated just like me and we had lots of spirited conversations (arguments some would say) but they always ended with a smile and a laugh which is why I liked Ernie so much. I have missed him at the hospital where the level of intelligent discourse has definitely taken a nose dive since he left. - Posted by: Rob McConnell (Co-worker) on: Sep 09, 2016

Renee,I am shocked and deeply saddened to learn that the world has lost such a fabulous man. Ernie was unique! He was brilliant, caring, humble and he could always make me laugh. In fact , he often got me in trouble in junior high by cracking me up with his quick wit. It was interesting to read about how much he loved cats, because he rescued a parking lot kitten at my wedding and tried to give it to us for Presentation - once again, making me laugh !! I wish there was something I could say to ease your tremendous loss. I hope your memories and the beautiful love you shared will help to ease your pain. I live in Calgary now so I cannot attend the service, but please know how much I love you and loved Ernie. - Posted by: Jo-Anne Jackson (Kowalyk) (Friend) on: Sep 08, 2016
