KIMBERLY (KIM) JAMES MARSHALL, CD April 4, 1956 - October 2, 2016 "Unable are the loved to die, for love is immortal" - Emily Dickinson It is with profound sadness our family announces the peaceful passing at home of Kim Marshall, husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and respected Sensei. Kim took his final breath enfolded in a circle of love, with his wife and children. Left to cherish and honour Kim's memory is his loving wife Sharon Alward; his beloved children, Michael (Stacey), Jamie (Jennie) and Melissa Stein (G.W.); precious grand-children, Wyatt, Quinn, Rory, Parker, Miles and Abigail; and his brother David (Khim). Kim will be deeply mourned by the martial arts community, especially the children, women and men of Meibukan Goju Karate Winnipeg and Canadian and international Dojo Directors of Meibukan Karate. Kim was born in Kitchener, Ontario to Edwin and Elizabeth (Windsor) Marshall. He deeply mourned the tragic early death of his mother. Kim proudly followed his father's footsteps into police work. Sargeant Kim Marshall, CD, was a 21-year veteran of the Canadian Armed Forces military police and a former member of the Service's elite Close Personal Protection Team (CPPT). Kim was fond of saying that on the Friday of his retirement; he took off his military police uniform and exchanged it on Monday for a karate gi. He leaves a profound legacy to the thousands of karate-ka he taught over the decades, including over 200 of his students who achieved their black belts, following their Sensei's path of honour. Kim's dedication to his career was surpassed only by his strong and abiding love for his three children. In later years, he took great delight in his grandchildren, together with his wife Sharon. Sharon was his "Sun, Moon and Stars" and they shared a deep closeness and eternal love. Their love story remains an inspiration. Kim Sensei, 6th Dan (black belt degree), Okinawa Meibukan Goju-Ryu Karate-do, Dojo Director, Meibukan Goju Karate Winnipeg, lived the code of Bushido to the end. In every sense a true warrior, Kim was the embodiment of bushido values: loyalty, courage, honesty, compassion, honour and a profound respect for life. He faced death calmly and with courage. Sensei Kim's funeral will take place on Saturday, October 8, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Luke's Anglican Church at 130 Nassau Street. Kim's family extends their sincere appreciation for the skilled and compassionate care by the Palliative Care team, particularly nurses, Kelly and Davindar, and Dr. Joel Gingerich. In lieu of flowers, contributions to The Canadian Cancer Society or a charity close to your own heart would be appreciated. Condolences & Memories (14 entries)

  • My dearest condolences to the Marshall family. This was such a surprise to hear of Sensei Kim's passing. He meant so much to my two daughters who studied with Kim at the St James dojo for many years. He was truly a wonderful man and a beautiful human being. Always looking after his kids at the dojo. I am so grateful to have known him. - Posted by: Kim Lawson (Reith) (Friend, former parent of a fellow student) on: Oct 31, 2016

  • Thank you Sensei Kim for all the knowledge, time and patience you have shared with myself and many other Karateka. You were and are a gift to this planet. A treasure to all who were lucky enough to know you. You will be missed! - Posted by: Cherie Denison (Meibukan) on: Oct 10, 2016

  • Kim was a true friend. We sat side by side at many martial arts tournaments We worked as judges and watched our own students compete against one another. Kim became a legacy in Winnipeg as a great martial artist, instructor and club owner. He worked hard building up a wonderful dojo. My deepest sympathy to Sharon and all the family. - Words are a very futile thing To give to a grieving friend. They fall into a memory That only time can mend. - Posted by: Bill BELL ( Sensei - Sifu ) former Chin-Na Dragon Institute. (Good friend) on: Oct 08, 2016

  • As one of Sensei Kim's longest-standing students (I started training with him at 17 Wing Goju in 1994), I can affirm the kind of man that he was. You see, he wasn't only my sensei, he was also a father to me. Despite sometimes years in between when we'd speak, every time we got back in touch, I was welcomed warmly and with open arms. He knew of my personal family issues and never failed to offer support, advice, and words that even today stick with me. I'm not the sort of person who cries, but when I heard of his passing, sobbed like a child. "Unable are the loved to die, for love is immortal" That night, I dreamed of him again - he knew he was gone, "But that doesn't matter Darryl. You don't need to be sad like this - we'll meet up again soon." - Posted by: Darryl Hadfield (Student) on: Oct 07, 2016

  • We may not have seen each other as often as we wanted to, life got in the way, but we knew you were always there for us. You would wish us happy birthday late but then you always remembered. We love you and know that you will still be there for us forever and always, until we meet again Kim - Posted by: Dave and Khim (Brother and partner) on: Oct 07, 2016

  • Thank you sensei..in your visit to Guelph in 2010, your words of encouragement help me get through the loss of Stella. I will never forget you and your words. A true gentleman and karateka. My sincere condolences to the Marshall family. - Posted by: Roberto Vasquez (Friend meibukan) on: Oct 06, 2016

  • My deepest condolences to Michael, Sharon and Marshall family on behalf of my family. I have known Kim Marshall for 20+ years almost from the time he started the karate school. He was always friendly to talk to and positive about life and family, respectful and passionate about karate, his Dojo and his students. We always had great sidebar conversations whenever when chatted outside, around or in his Dojo. I will miss those talks. It was a privilege to have known Kim. Kim embodied honour and values and shared and passed down to those around him and through his students. My sincere condolences to Kim's family. - Posted by: Alfred Gin () on: Oct 06, 2016

  • I met Kim 42 yrs ago when we went through Basic Recruit training. We have been stationed at the same Bases/Wings several times. Kim was one of the nicest people I have ever known. In addition, he was there for me and my son at a time when I really needed his help and have always appreciated the support he gave me. He will always be in my heart and will be greatly missed. RIP Kim - Posted by: Shelly Shane (Friend) on: Oct 06, 2016

  • Sad to see Kim depart so soon. He rose to many challenges including geographic distances from the usual network of support relatives. Clearly his 'Bio' illustrates he cultivated his own network of inner strength, managed by mindfulness. Peaceful Travels. - Posted by: Arbuckle [ Marshall ] Family (family) on: Oct 06, 2016

  • Kim was a extraordinary example of what would be referred to as a poster person for the martial arts community. His caring, his giving and his humbleness is truly what set aside a such well respected instructor and a man who lived his beliefs. He was a compliment to all martial arts practitioners. He will always live on in the hearts of all who trained with him and shared with him their love for their style. Sincere condolences to Sensei's Kim family both at home and in his martial arts life. He definitely has left lifelong footprints here in the city of Winnipeg and will be missed by many. - Posted by: Rick Stephens (friend) on: Oct 06, 2016

  • I first met Kim in 1995 in Winnipeg. While I was on course in Winnipeg, I studied Karate with Sensei Kim. No matter how long between visits to Winnipeg, He always treated me as a friend and warmly greeted me at his dojos. He was a fine man, and a good friend. Carol and I extend our deepest sympathies to Jamie, Michael, Melissa and Sharon. - Posted by: Kent Molyneaux (friend and Karate student) on: Oct 06, 2016
