GERALD SAUNDERSON BARKER Gerald Saunderson Barker, age 87 years, died on Sunday afternoon, October 2, 2016, at the Health Sciences Centre, surrounded by his family. He was born prematurely on the family farm near LaVallee, ON, on December 27, 1928. He grew up in Geraldton, ON, and left home to study for a Bachelor of Science in Geology at Queen's University, and then a Master of Geological Engineering at the University of Manitoba, where he met his future wife, Jacquelyn Milton. He worked as an exploration geologist and became a member of the Association of Professional Engineers of Ontario. This work took him across Canada and to Bolivia. In January, 1964 he married Jacquelyn, and spent five years as a teacher in Ontario. During that time his family expanded with the addition of two sons, Michael and Gregory, and a dog, Linda. They moved back to Winnipeg in 1971 and had a daughter, Marilyn. In 1976 he joined Scouts Canada as a committee member and became a Scout Leader in 1979, a role he continued until 2011. His Scout camps were always accompanied by his dog, first Midnight and later Blue. All his life he maintained an active interest in science, nature, and the outdoors and a respect for indigenous people and their relationship with the land. Gerald is survived by his wife, Jacquelyn; sons, Michael (Cameron) and Gregory; daughter Marilyn (John); and sisters, Luella (Hank) and Rachel (Eric). He is predeceased by his sister Marilyn McMahan (Wally) of Geraldton, ON. The family would like to thank the staff at HSC for their compassion and care. A funeral service celebrating his life will be held at St. George's Anglican Church in Winnipeg on Saturday, October 8, 2016, at 11:00 a.m., with a reception after the service. In lieu of flowers, please donate to Canadian Mission for the Blind, the Alzheimer Society of Canada, or the charity of your choice. Condolences & Memories (5 entries)

  • I remember as a child when Uncle Gerald was sleeping in the same house as I was that I would go in to see him in the early morning (7 ish) and ask him if he wanted to play cards with me! I always gave him the option of playing in bed or getting up. Most times he got up! It was always lots of fun! At the 50 Year Geraldton Reunion I remember Uncle Gerald carrying his daughter Mary Beth and her doll around the area. Sometime it was just Uncle Gerald and the doll as Mary Beth had gone elsewhere. Now that's a dotting Dad! When Uncle Gerald came to Kingston for the Queens Reunion he stayed with us and later came to the cottage. I remember him taking me and Harry, my husband out on the big deck one night and telling us about the different constellations! I think he knew them all! He also told us about constellations that are only seen in other parts of the world. Fascinating! I think my favourite thing about Uncle Gerald is the love of rocks that he has given me. It is fascinating to break open a rock and see what is inside! The combinations of colours and types of rock (granite and quartz fused together) is amazing! Though I haven't seen Uncle Gerald lately I know that I will miss him. He was always happy and ready to help. Goodbye Uncle Gerald. - Posted by: Kathy Louise (Neice) on: Oct 08, 2016

  • I was reflecting back to an afternoon when I was in grade 5 or so where we were at Lake of the Woods and Uncle Gerald and I went for a walk down the shore line. He started talking about the ice age and said you could tell the speed of the ice by how smooth the granite was. Think he said it moved at about 7 feet a year in that area. We when found a long vein of quartz and he explained the relationship between quartz and gold. I spent the rest of that summer hammering on that rock looking for gold. To this day I still look at the granite when ever I am somewhere new on the shield to judge the speed of the ice, the things you remember Condolences to my cousins and to you Aunt Jackie, RIP Uncle Gerald - Posted by: paul milton (nephew) on: Oct 07, 2016

  • Sending my deepest condolences to you Michael, and your family. Although I didn't know your father, his obituary leaves no doubt he was a fascinating man in his day. I wish I had the opportunity to have met him but feel in knowing you as well as I do, I actually did in some small way. And I know he is now resting in peace ♡ - Posted by: Elizabeth McQueen (Friend of Michael ) on: Oct 06, 2016

  • Scouting has lost a dedicated, kind, and caring scout leader. As a volunteer leader, I appreciated Gerald's commitment to and knowledge of scouting. Gerald was always there to help. He was an amazing person. Countless boys and leaders got to enjoy scouting because Gerald was always there helping and leading. - Posted by: Robert Kury (Fellow Scout Leader) on: Oct 06, 2016

  • So many family memories growing up together! Our families loved each other in the good and the crazy. My family's thoughts and prayers are with the rest of you! - Posted by: Lisa Baird Wilcox (family friend) on: Oct 06, 2016
