LORNE GEORGE HOW Lorne passed away peacefully early in the morning of Saturday, October 8, 2016 after a lengthy battle with cancer. Lorne was born on September 23, 1944 in Winnipeg to Bill and Ruby How. He was predeceased by his wife Marguerite, both of his parents and his nieces Cherie and Darlene. Lorne is survived by his daughter Jennifer (Jason) and son Bradford (Veronica). He is also survived by his brother Don (Liz) and sister Wilma (John). Uncle Lorne will also be missed by too many nieces and nephews to mention by name. Lorne's memory is also cherished by sister in law, Barbara (Brian) and family. Lorne was also loved and will be missed by Marguerite's extended family who took him in as one of their own. Lorne joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in January 1963 and served proudly retiring as a Master Corporal in December 1974. He always spoke fondly of his time in service to his country and the friends that he still counted across the country that he served with. After leaving the service, Lorne first worked at the Convention Centre in security management for 2 years. He then went on to the security department at the Health Sciences Centre where he served first as assistant director and then as the director retiring in 2002. Lorne made it a mission to know as many people's names as he could of the 1000's of employees at HSC. Lorne had several passions in his life. He loved his family and this extended to his friends. Along with Marguerite, they welcomed many into their home, their table and their hearts. Lorne loved golf! He had been a member at Larters for 25 years and played his regular Saturday game until last summer. His love of the game extended to volunteering and working for Golf Manitoba where many looked forward to seeing him. He loved traveling to see family and friends and in the last year this included trips to the cottage. Lorne took his diagnosis as a challenge. A challenge to beat the odds and a challenge to fill his life as fully as he could in the time he had left. And it would be impossible to say that he didn't succeed. We wish to thank all of those with Cancercare Manitoba who helped Lorne throughout his illness. He spoke fondly of all of you. Specifically we want to thank Dr. Gordon who never gave up on our dad and always lifted his spirits even when the news was bad, Dr. Ogaranko who provided weekly care to dad over the last year and the many chemo nurses who even visited dad in the hospital this past week. While we know you would say it's your job, it meant much more to all of us. We are comforted that Lorne is no longer in pain. We will miss you always and know that you will always be in our hearts and watching over our putts. Funeral service will be held on Monday, October 17, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue. Interment and reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to CancerCare Manitoba in memory of Lorne. For those who wish to sign the online Guest Book please visit our website.

  • Dear Jen and Brad, I was saddened to hear of your Dad's passing and sorry that I was not there in person today, but please know that myself and our family (Pam, Rick and Jacqueline) are thinking of you all. I have fond memories of all of us camping together and your Dad keeping us all in line with his lieutenant-like voice! I loved your dad's dry sense of humour too! Your parents were both wonderful people and they certainly left a mark on me. I think of you all quite often. Take care, Love Angela, Ross and the boys. - Posted by: Angela Dyer (family friend) on: Oct 17, 2016

  • My condolences to Jen (Jason) and Brad (Veronica). Your parents always made me feel so welcomed and loved since my first trip to Canada to visit Jen back in 1989-90, 27 years was not nearly long enough to have them in my life. I know they will watch over you always, their love for you was obvious and strong. I'm glad I was able to get at least one round of golf in with Lorne, I love you guys! - Posted by: Michelle McKim () on: Oct 17, 2016

  • Will miss you terribly Lorne, you were that rare breed of wonderful, kind, respectful and decent human being. It was my privilege to know you, and share my family with you. Love you always. - Posted by: Bev Hutton (Friend, admirer, cousin ) on: Oct 17, 2016

  • We were very sorry to hear that Lorne had passed away. We met Lorne and Marguerite when we moved into the new development, Canterbury Park, in the mid-70's and they lived across the back lane from us. Those were wonderful days when we both had young children who played together almost daily and we saw each other often. They were wonderful neighbours who became good friends. We will treasure those memories always. Our deepest condolences to Jennifer, Jason, Brad and Veronica. We regret we were unable to attend the service. Chris and Mark send their condolences as well. Love from the Tracy family. - Posted by: Ron and Susan Tracy (Old friend and neighbour) on: Oct 17, 2016

  • I know I am not at your celebration today in person - I am there in my heart and so is Derek and the girls. I doubt there will be enough room anyway! You were so very loved cherished and admired by many❤️ I know you are with your love now watching over us all - I will always remember your dancing, your laugh and most of all your hugs - #loveyourfamily - Posted by: erica hatch (niece) on: Oct 17, 2016

  • It was a pleasure volunteering with Lorne at the numerous events he was working. Lorne always made every volunteer feel appreciated and welcome. He will be missed! - Posted by: Carol Martel (Fellow Golf MB Volunteer) on: Oct 17, 2016

  • I knew Lorne for 37 years from the time I became a member of the Manitoba Protective Officer's Association (MPOA) in 1979. In 1982 he offered me a job at the HSC and over the next 15 years that I worked there, we became great friends. He taught me a lot about being a security professional and helped shape my career over those years. He had a huge heart and always wanted the best for everyone. When I left the HSC in 1997, we still stayed in touch on a regular basis as MPOA members and by playing some golf together. We also enjoyed going to Jets games together over the last 5 years. I admired his courage during his battle with cancer as he never let it get the best of him. He refused to stop doing the things he loved to do and he succeeded right to the very end. I'm truly going to miss Lorne. Rest in peace my friend. My deepest condolences to Jennifer, Brad and the rest of the family. - Posted by: Walter Weber (Friend & co-worker) on: Oct 16, 2016

  • Diane and I are sad to hear of Lorne's passing. Years of working together formed a great friendship at the Health Sciences Centre. A true friend that could be counted on through thick and thin. To Lorne's family our condolence. - Posted by: Morris & Diane Atkinson (Friend and co-worker) on: Oct 16, 2016

  • Lorne was a wonderful person and an excellent friend with an incredibly big heart. We will miss you buddy. - Posted by: Greg & Angie Libbrecht (Friend) on: Oct 16, 2016

  • So sorry for your loss. I remember those early days of book club, when we first met Lorne and Marguerite. Your mom and dad embraced the raucous book club and could hold their own in discussion and celebration. Their warmth and kindness left a lasting impression on us, which is consistent with the feelings of all of your friends, Jen. Lorne's last years were a triumph, and I was proud to call him my friend. - Posted by: Theresa Oswald (Book Clubber and friend of the family) on: Oct 16, 2016

  • My sympathies to all of Lorne's family. I love this picture of Lorne! He looks so relaxed and happy! Lorne was my guardian angel when I was the Manager/Director of Adult Emergency at HSC. He always came to see me at the drop of a hat, willing to help with any new challenge! We ran into one another here and there over the years, the last time on the way to one of his appointments at CancerCare. His spirit was strong and we shared memories of days gone by and he left me with a hug and that crooked grin. Play on Lorne! - Posted by: Trish Bergal (Former Colleague) on: Oct 16, 2016

  • Lorne was a joy to work with, approaching his job with competence, contagious enthusiasm and good humour. Sincere sympathy to family and friends. - Posted by: Audrey Hawkins (Friend and Co-worker) on: Oct 15, 2016

  • Dawn and I were very saddened to hear of Lorne's passing. Lorne and I worked closely together on many security and other issues while at the Winnipeg Health Sciences Centre. His help, support and ideas were always most helpful and appreciated. He was totally dedicated to his profession and to the mission of the HSC and to top it off he was an extremely good person. It was an honour to have known him. Lorne would always phone me on my birthday and we would talk about "the good old HSC days". I will remember these chats fondly. Lorne and Marguerite paid us a visit in West Kelowna a couple of years ago and we really enjoyed an evening together. Sampling Okanagan wine probably helped the discussion along too I'm sure! To everyone in Lorne's family, please accept our deepest sympathy. Wayne and Dawn Byron - Posted by: Wayne Byron (friend and co-worker) on: Oct 15, 2016

  • Our condolences to you, Jen. - Posted by: Trevor De Ryck & Charlotte Martens () on: Oct 15, 2016

  • I am very sorry to hear of Lorne's passing. He was always a pleasure to work with at Golf Manitoba events. For us "newbie" volunteers, Lorne always made himself available to help us out and answer questions. He made the job fun! - Posted by: Tracy Rutledge (Fellow Volunteer) on: Oct 13, 2016

  • I have known Lorne since I was a young policeman in the early 80s as he was in charge of HSC security. He was always a welcoming person during trying times when dealing with unruly clients. Later as I had the opportunity to reconnect with Lorne at Golf Manitoba he was the same welcoming person is a much friendlier environment. My condolences to his family on the passing of a very caring and warm person. - Posted by: Mike Lagace (Friend) on: Oct 13, 2016
