JOAN MARJORY SWAINSON Joan Marjory Swainson (nee Sim) was born on July 4, 1938, in Winnipeg. She passed at Grace Hospital on October 12, 2016. Joan graduated from St. James Collegiate in 1956. She married Ralph Swainson at the First Lutheran Church on August 30, 1958. They lived and worked in Moose Jaw and Saskatoon before settling in Winnipeg in 1972. In her early years, she worked at Eaton's, then as a technician at Winnipeg General Hospital. She later worked as a Health Care Aide at Oakview Place for 17 years, always with mints in her pocket to share with her residents. Joan loved her family and gardening, and waged a constant battle against clover and the rabbits of Charleswood. She and Ralph loved to travel to far-flung places, starting with a trip through Germany, Italy, and Austria as a young couple. More recent travels included Iceland, where Ralph's family immigrated from, Hong Kong, China, Morocco, the Caribbean, Alaska, and their favourite, Hawaii. She was a kind and considerate woman, quietly helping many people over the years. She loved animals, and was always up for pet-sitting, even when the cats stole her puzzle pieces or sat on her cards as she tried to play solitaire. Joan was predeceased by her infant son, Anthony, in 1965, by her parents, Bill and Helen Sim, and in-laws, Walter and Joan. She is survived by Ralph, her husband of 58 years, daughter Brook, and her sons Brian (John) and Brent. She is also survived by her brother Jim (Gloria), sister Lynda (Doug), and by numerous nieces and nephews. Special thanks to Dr. Gurveen Sidhu, the EMS team, and the staff of Grace Hospital Emergency Department and the 5th floor, for your kindness and compassion in Joan's final hours. Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, October 28, 2016 at First Lutheran Church, 580 Victor Street, near the corner of Sargent and Victor. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Joan's name to a charity of your choice. NEIL BARDAL FUNERAL CENTRE 204-949-2200 neilbardalinc.com

Condolences & Memories (4 entries)

  • Ralph, I was sorry to hear about Joan. Although I didn't know her well I do know you and what you are going through because I also suffered the same loss. Take comfort that you have friends and family to help. I have been a little under the weather so I won't make the service today but please know that I am thinking of you. All the best, Don Ross - Posted by: Don Ross (Hockey friend from Inner City Oldtimers and Wednesday night at Allard.) on: Oct 28, 2016

  • I knew Joan a long time ago when she and Ralph were involved in hockey, (Brooklyn Bruins). She always had interesting stories to tell the hockey wives. We had lots of fun as a team. - Posted by: Catherine Desjarlais (née Meikle) (Friend) on: Oct 22, 2016

  • I was shocked and saddened to see Joan's obituary in Saturday's Free Press. Ina and I wish to express our deepest sympathies to you and your family on your loss. It was always nice to see Joan at our ball games supporting the team. Her presence and support for the Voyageurs will be missed. - Posted by: Weldon Hiebert (Coach) on: Oct 17, 2016
