KATHERINE RITCHIE MULHOLLAND Katherine Mulholland died peacefully, with family at her side, at the age of 95. Katherine was predeceased by her husband Douglas, her sister Evelyn and her brother Edward. She is remembered by her sons and their families: Douglas (Donna) and sons James and Michael (Chelsea), Grant (Terry) and sons Donnie, Jason (Pauline) and Gordon (Raegan), Alan (Aven) and sons Gregg and Reed, and her daughter Margaret and daughters Joanne (Zak) and Alison. She was proud to be a great-grandmother to Georgia, Jacob, Ella, Millie and Jones. She was loved by her many nieces and nephews. Katherine was born to James and Lena MacDonald in Winnipeg in 1921. She was a premature baby but strong from the start. Her mother died when Katherine was an infant leaving her to be raised by her father surrounded by a strong extended family including her "Grams" and Nurse Murray. Katherine attended Machray School, St. Mary's Academy and Success Business College. She worked for a short while as a secretary at Blue Ribbon Tea and Coffee. She met the love her life, Douglas Mulholland at the age of 18 and they married in 1943. Katherine was proud of the strong committed relationship that grew between them. Together they raised their family, built their home and cottage at White Lake in the Whiteshell. Known as Babe to those closest to her she was a force to be reckoned with. She defended those she loved and was not easily intimidated by those who might challenge her. She loved to spend her time with others, often visiting friends and chatting with neighbours. She frequently said "I just love people". Katherine was an active member of Westworth United Church, singing in the choir for a number of years and volunteering in many capacities. She was an avid bridge player, loved cribbage and also took part in lawn bowling and curling. In her later years she enjoyed living at the Wellington, taking part in many activities there. The family would like to thank the staff of West Park Manor, unit 2E for their kindness and compassion shown to Katherine during the time she spent there. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Katherine's memory to the Canadian National Institute for the Blind, 1080 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R3G 3M3. A celebration of life will take place on Wednesday October 19, 2016 at 2 pm at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens and Funeral Home at 4000 Portage Avenue. There will be a reception to follow. • Katherine was a wonderful lady and so much fun to have known! A number of years ago, she used to chum around with my masonic lodge brother, Hilton Harper. Hilton was a widower and they both were residents of The Wellington. I lived out that way and would carpool to monthly lodge meetings with Hilton. I got to know Katherine as she was often invited along to events with the lodge including dinners or bowling nights and such. More than once I had both her and Hilton riding in the back of my old Jeep, and Katherine was such a good sport! She would talk about how proud of her family she was, with details about their latest accomplishments. She truly cared about what you were up to, and she was genuinely interested in what I was up to as well. For example I often get "back home" to Nova Scotia, and one year (maybe 1997?) in advance of my trip she drew out a very detailed map which lead to her family's "MacDonald" cairn. If memory serves me, it was located near Pictou. I still have the map at home, I'll have to dig it out! Our lodge added her to our "widow's list" (as an "honorary widow"), after Hilton's passing. This might be a strange honour, but I wanted to make sure we didn't lose contact with her and this was the best way. I'm sure Hilton would have approved, as long as nobody got the impression they were a "couple"! Ps. I've got a story about that too... They were just buddies! : ) I still get a kick out of one of our members visiting with her at Christmastime not long ago, fruitcake gift in hand, where he (the poor fellow) insisted that her late husband was a member of our fraternity. Katherine was trying to straighten him out, and of course she knew what she was talking about! The well-intended lodge member (once I explained to him the circumstances) was a little embarrassed but at least it was confirmed why he was mistaken! She seemed to me a great matriarch and the world was better with her in it. My condolences on your loss. - Posted by: Troy Blair (aquaintance) on: Oct 18, 2016

  • A lot of fond memories of Mrs. Mulholland from watching her water ski at White Lake in her late sixties, to playing crib with her while eating her famous oatmeal cookies on Lindsay. A truly wonderful person. - Posted by: Neil Davis (friend of Alan's ) on: Oct 17, 2016

  • To Doug, Grant, Margaret, Alan and families Sorry to hear of your mother's passing. However, I can only think that she had a long, happy life. She was a wonderful lady. I had the utmost respect for both her and your father. There were some great stories over the years about your parents and mine. Whenever I did speak with her via telephone, your mother always made me feel like I had her total attention and she was interested in my life......she truly was a people person. Thank you for sharing your mother with me. Please know that the Pratt siblings.....Fred Jr, Bill, Heather, Diane have you in our thoughts and are sending our condolences to all of you. Sincerely, Heather & Randy Sigurdson Arborg, MB - Posted by: Heather Sigurdson (nee Pratt) (family friend) on: Oct 16, 2016
