Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryEARL CLAYTON MCMILLAN June 11, 1923 - October 14, 2016 It is with sadness but gratitude for a life well lived, the family announces the passing of Earl Clayton McMillan on October 14, 2016 at the Victoria General Hospital. Left to celebrate his life and mourn his passing are his children Donna McMillan (Charles Lye), Gerry (Gwen), Sandra McCausland (Jim), Dan (Bev), Aleta McMillan Graham (Jim), and Geoffrey (Lynn); his grandchildren Julie (Glen), Jill (Rob), Jamie (Nick), Kate (Jeremy), Andrew, David (Jasmine), Kyle (Jin-Ling), Brian (Renee), Taylor (Pete), Dan, Matt (Tara), Genelle (Krispen) and Maggie; his 10 great-grandchildren, his stepchildren and step-grandchildren. Earl was predeceased by his wife and the mother of his children, Margaret in 2000 and by his second wife Beryl in 2008. He was also predeceased by his sisters, Florence Crawford and Helen McQueen as well as his brothers, Don, Bruce and Basil. Dad was born on June 11, 1923 in Gilbert Plains, Manitoba. His father passed away when he was 11 years old and this shaped the man he was to become. He remained on the farm helping his mother until he joined the R.C.A.F. in 1942 and he proudly served his country as a pilot flying from India and the Cocos Islands. The relationships formed there lasted a lifetime. Following his discharge from the R.C.A.F., while at Success Business College he met our mother, Margaret, and they were married shortly after. He then returned to school to begin his training as a Chartered Accountant. He began his career articling with Dunwoody, Saul, Smith and Company and subsequently moved to the employ of HL Burch to finish his articling. In 1956 he started his own accounting practice without his CA designation and after receiving his CA designation in 1958 took on a couple of partners. Legend has it that when he received his CA designation, there was great rejoicing in the McMillan household. In 1961, he returned as a partner to Dunwoody and Company. He had a long and distinguished career in his field. He was a Trustee in Bankruptcy and for a number of years was the Managing Partner at Dunwoody. He retired in 1983. On his retirement from the CA profession, Dad returned to his farming roots when he and Mom settled down to a hobby of beekeeping on a small acreage close to Whitemouth, Manitoba. The "hobby' grew into a small family business that included Dan, Bev, Sandra and Jim. The enterprise generated more good memories than profit. Dad always said that their bees produced the best honey in Manitoba which might be true as it made its way to many and various parts of the world. In 1998 he left beekeeping behind and once again returned to a life of leisure. Dad was very community minded and was a member of the Cosmopolitan Club for many years. He served on a number of volunteer boards throughout his lifetime including the Western Canada Aviation Museum and the Red River Apiarist Association. Dad travelled extensively throughout his lifetime and saw much of the world including Australia, Europe, Panama, Mexico, Alaska, The British Isles and Asia. His last great adventure was in 2010 when he returned to the Cocos Islands with his grandson Matt. Despite our concern with him travelling half way around the world at 87 years old, it was his dream and he had wanted to return since the day he left. He couldn't have been happier! Dad was a man of great principles, honesty and integrity. He had a wonderful, dry sense of humour, he loved a good joke and was known to be a bit of a prankster. "The mistletoe hangs" will live on in infamy. He rarely turned down a good glass of scotch. He loved the outdoors and we took many camping trips although he was just as happy to sit out in the yard. He was always up on world events and was a bit of a news junkie. Dad loved his family most of all and was the happiest in the midst of his kids, grandkids and great-grandkids. Please join us in a celebration of Earl's life on Friday, October 28, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at Thomson "In the Park" Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Boulevard. The family would like to express our sincere appreciation to the staff at Dogwood House at the Rosewood, and in particular June with whom he felt a special connection and to the staff on 5 North at the Victoria Hospital whose compassion and caring were beyond compare. It was an honor to assist Earl, although he was unbelievably independent. I will treasure the memories of his great sense of humor, his keen knowledge of current affairs, the experiences of his life he shared with us in the "Doghouse"! Earl was an honorable man, he embraced nature and loved the times he could sit out and soak up the sun. He was always involved in the activities, whether it was handball, soccer or card games and never let his physical challenges get in the way of his enjoyment. He was so well respected by the other tenants in our house and we all feel a sense of loss. Earl is missed dearly. Rest now and be at peace. Affectionately, June - Posted by: June Cooper (care giver) on: Oct 28, 2016
