GUDRUN JOHANNA VIGFUSSON (nee SIGURDSON) September 3, 1911 - October 13, 2016 Peacefully, at the Arborg Personal Care Home, Gunna passed away on October 13, 2016. Left to mourn are her daughter Ethel and son-in-law Barney; grandchildren, Warren and Shelley; Tim (Kaelyn), Jillian (Dale) with Klaya and Kallie, Grant and Tannis; Craig (Nicky), Shane (Caitlyn), Neil (Laura) and Nori, Shauna and Wayne; Jake and Johann, Mark and Natalie; Shae Lynne (Taylor), Brenna (Brady) and Meagan, Kevin and Lisa; Eli, Isabel and Lily. She is also survived by sisters-in-law, Olaf Sigurdson and Alyce Sigurdson and numerous nieces and nephews. Gunna was predeceased by her parents Thorgrimur and Magnea and in-laws Johanna and Gudmundur Vigfusson; her husband Einar; daughter Dora; and son-in-law Victor; brothers, Geir, John (Gudrun), Mike, Thor (Joey), Ingi (Evelyn); sisters, Olga (Steve), Dora, Heidi (Frank); brothers-in-law, Joe (Emma) and Bergur; nephews, Dean Hibbert, Dean Orbanski, Ralph Sigurdson, Brian Holm, Ken Holm, Pall (Bernice) Vigfusson, Herman Vigfusson and Baldwin Vigfusson. Gunna was the oldest of nine children born within 10 years. Her childhood years were spent helping to care for her siblings. By the time she was 15 she worked with her Aunty Gunna who was a cook at the Ninette TB Sanitorium to help support family. Within a few years she began working at the Arborg Farmers Co-op, where she worked until 1936 when she married Einar. They farmed with his brother Bergur. Einar and Berger spent several winters fishing on Lake Winnipeg. Gunna with her in-laws looked after the farm. In 1937 Ethel was born and three years later Dora was born. While Gunna raised her daughters and helped with farming she took time to take part in Community activities. She played piano for all the Vestri-Framnes Christmas concerts and other choirs and soloists who performed in the area. She and Einar were in choirs who performed at Icelandic Celebrations in Hnausa and Gimli. They were active in the Ardal Lutheran Church and sang in the choir. Gunna was a member of the Ladies Aid in Framnes and later in Arborg. When Einar's health failed he retired from farming and they moved to a house in Arborg and then the Lodge. She lived in the Lodge for 30 years, then moved to the Assisted Living and eventually the PCH. Gunna's family and many friends were very important to her. She had a positive attitude which carried her through many difficult situations. She was quick-witted and spunky. Those who knew her admired and loved her for these characteristics. She will be fondly remembered by all who called her Mom, Amma, Lang Amma, Aunty, sister, cousin, neighbour and friend. A celebration of her life will take place at the Ardal Geysir Lutheran Church on Saturday, November 12 at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Gary Schenk officiating. A family interment will take place prior to the service. If friends so desire, donations may be made in her memory to the AGLC or Arborg & District PCH, Box 10, Arborg, MB, R0C 0A0. The family would like to thank Home Care and staff at the Lodge and Assisted Living for their care. We would also like to thank the doctors, nurses and all staff at the PCH for the excellent care during her stay. MacKenzie Funeral Home Arborg 1-800-467-0024 info@mackenziefh.com
