WILLEM (BILL) VANDENBERG
Born: Nov 17, 1930
Date of Passing: Oct 19, 2016
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryWILLEM (BILL) VANDENBERG November 17, 1930 - October 19, 2016 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Willem Vandenberg on October 19, 2016. He leaves to mourn, his daughter Anne (Wes) and grandsons, Steven and Michael, and son John (Val) and grandsons Conrad and Eric. He is survived by his sisters Mieke (Lazlo), Jessy (Piet), Anna, Tine (Henk), and brothers Johan (Agaathe) and Peter (Dianna) and numerous nephews and nieces in Canada, the Netherlands and New Zealand, as well as several close friends. He was predeceased by his wife Gwenda, mother Wjtske, father Siebe, sister Piete and brothers Dirk, Gerben, and Gerlof. Born in Friesland, Bill spent his youth in the city of Sneek. He received technical training and worked as an instrument mechanic in the Dutch Airforce. He immigrated to Canada in 1954, worked his way across the country on tobacco fields and farms, and settled in Winnipeg, where he worked for the MacDonald/Bristol Co. In 1957 he met and married Gwenda, and together they began a family and a life together. He dearly loved his "Canadian mother" Anne Morrison. He worked hard and pursued education, completing high school in Canada, and graduating with honors with a BSc. from Bradley University, Illinois. In 1964 he was the first teacher hired to start the Teacher Training program at the Manitoba Institute of Technology. He pioneered many programs during his seven years of service. In 1970 he founded the St. James Montessori School. He taught Industrial Arts in the public schools for 14 years and retired in 1986. Dad was a generous man who was known to give the "shirt off his back" if he thought someone was in need. He was a man of his word and set a great example for his family. Dad was always happiest out on a lake, fishing and enjoying the sunshine. He also was happy when he could soar through the skies in his Cessna 150. His kids, and later his grandchildren were often his co-pilots. Dad flew his own aircraft until the age of eighty. He donated his Cessna to the Manitoba Chapter of the International Association of Women Pilots, an organization that has since used this aircraft to introduce hundreds of young women to the field of aviation. We will remember our dad as a unique and intelligent man who was fiercely independent and always stood up for what he believed. He will be greatly missed. We take comfort in knowing that he lived his life to the fullest. He is now at peace. Hold thou Thy cross before my closing eyes Shine through the gloom and point me to the skies Heaven's morning breaks and earth's vain shadows flee In life, in death oh Lord abide with me Bill will be laid to rest with his wife Gwenda in a private family ceremony at Elmwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in dad's memory to the Manitoba Chapter of the International Association of Women Pilots.

I know it’s been 5 years since Bill’s passing but I’ve been living in BC for 12 years and I just read his Obituary. Bill’s classes at Red River were the most fun I ever had in a classroom. Some students didn’t appreciate his uniqueness but I certainly did. He taught me the 3 “F” to being a successful teacher and I incorporated them almost daily in my 32 years of teaching. FAIR, FIRM and FRIENDLY. I spent many days fishing with Bill on Boaster Lake travelling there in his beloved Volkswagen Van. Sorry this is so late, Rest In Peace my friend. - Posted by: KEN Mailey (Student in teacher training ) on: May 15, 2021

I have very fond and deeply memories of my uncle Bill. In total I went nine times to Canada to visit my family and the beautiful country. In 1981 he introduced me to his lady C-FLUG. A plane he already owned for a number of years. He insisted I take a one week course at his home to study books about flying. He was very meticulous about safety and the right procedures. After this he said it will be so much more easier to talk and explain about details related to flying. I flew with him 24 (logged) hours during that beautiful summer of 1981 at Lyncrest. My final test was (him sitting beside me) doing preflight procedures and inspections, taxiing, take off, flying a full circuit, landing and parking and tying it down, with him not intervening. I could not have felt more proud than that special afternoon. So dear uncle Bill thank you for this and much, much more. I know you are very proud and honored that with the help of Jill Oakes, lady FLUG is save and a great aid for many women who want to become a pilot. Take care dear uncle. If possible, have many more beautiful flights up there. Love, Siebe van den Berg, Eindhoven, the Netherlands - Posted by: Siebe (Nephew) on: Nov 20, 2016

My most sincere condolences to Bill's family. Bill was the best of friends to our father, Dr. Ben Schwartz, over the years and for that I am forever grateful. When communication was difficult, Bill kindly helped me keep in touch with our dad by printing my emails and driving his motorized scooter a couple blocks to deliver them, rain or shine! His accomplishments show the courage and diligence of this remarkable man! Your mother was our major work 6th grade teacher, and the Woodhaven roots of our families intertwined for half a century. A life very well lived Mr. Vandenberg...thank you. - Posted by: Claire Schwartz () on: Nov 02, 2016
