Date of Passing: Oct 21, 2016
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryEDNA F. M. KIRK November 7, 1922 - October 21, 2016 Passed away peacefully on October 21, 2016 at Golden Links Lodge, after a short battle with cancer. She was predeceased by her beloved husband Bob on July 3, 2007. Left to cherish her memory are her sister Irene Degraff; her three sons Ross, Brian (Barbara), and Bruce (Karen); three grandsons, James (Rebecca), Graham (Shannon), and Andrew (Kristy); step-grandchildren, Cheryl and Allan; eight great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, and friends. Edna was a warm, kind, caring person who was liked by everyone who knew her. She was born at home on McLeod Avenue in E. Kildonan, and lived her whole life in Winnipeg, except for a brief stint in Regina when Bob's work took the family there. She worked outside the home occasionally, at the Mortgage Insurance Company of Canada, the Fort Garry Public Library, and the University of Manitoba Library, but her primary focus was her husband and her family. She gracefully handled being the only female in a house where even the dogs were male, and worked endlessly to provide a good home and upbringing for her children. She made sure the family was well fed and cared for, doing all the things mothers do, as well as putting up fresh vegetables every Fall from her sister's market garden, and knitting several sweaters for her sons which her great-grandchildren are now wearing. Amidst all this, she found time to pursue activities outside the home. She had a lifelong love of music and singing, belonging to a succession of choirs, including the Helen Horton choir and the Fort Garry United Church choir. She sang with the Women of Note choir for the first 10 years of its existence, and she and Bob sang around the piano with their friends on many occasions through the years. Edna continued to enjoy singing right through the final weeks of herlife. She curled in the women's league at The Wildewood Club for many years, scoring an 8-ender on one occasion, and learned to play a better-than-passable game of golf in her sixties. Edna inherited a love of words and language from her mother, who won the Free Press JUMBLE contest twice, and loved to do the daily crossword puzzles in the paper. She had a wonderful sense of humour that she carried with her right to the end of her life. The staff at Golden Links Lodge commented on how they will miss her witty remarks and positive attitude. While there is great sadness at her passing, Edna leaves behind warm memories of a truly Christian person who will be missed by all who knew her. If you wish, you can make a donation in Edna's name to The St. Georges Church Memorial Fund Inc., 168 Wilton St., Winnipeg, MB. R3M 3C3, the Women of Note choir, or a charity of your choice. A reception in honour of Edna will be held on Wednesday, November 9, 2016, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m., at Thomson In The Park Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Blvd, Winnipeg, MB R3T 5Y4, 204-925-1120.
