EVA SUTHERLAND
Born: Jan 31, 1931
Date of Passing: Oct 22, 2016
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryEVA SUTHERLAND On October 22, 2016 our beloved Eva died at Oakview Place. She was born in Erickson, Manitoba. January 31, 1931, the only child of Conrad and Aletta Freko (nee Listhaug), Norwegian immigrants. The family moved to Winnipeg, where Eva attended Mulvey Elementary and Gordon Bell High Schools. Eva graduated from United College and subsequently University of Toronto (Faculty of Library Sciences). Eva and Ian were married in 1955, and for the next several years Eva worked for the City of Winnipeg Library Services, supporting the family while Ian attended medical school. The family moved to Deep River, Ontario in 1962 and then back to Manitoba to Pinawa in 1964, and finally back to Winnipeg where Ian completed specialty training in Nuclear Medicine at the University of Manitoba. By this time, they had completed their family of four children. Eva was predeceased by her parents and then just months before her own death by her only daughter Karen. She is survived by her three sons and their spouses, Scott and Lindsay (Anne, Duncan, Jeffrey, and Laura), Mike and Donna, (Alison, Melanie, Mark, Nicola), Karen's children (Alanna, Elizabeth and Evelyn), and Eric and Donna (Katherine, Andrea, Erin, Erica), and their partners. Most recently, her great-granddaughter, Ava Karen met Nanny at Oakview, eliciting the biggest smile we had seen from Eva in months. Eva was active at Young United Church over many years, as long as she was able, serving in virtually all positions of service and governance. She especially enjoyed the fellowship of the United Church Women (UCW), which was very dear to her heart. Eva's life was not an easy one. She had Rheumatoid Arthritis for decades and the disease and its treatment took a toll particularly in the last several years restricting her activities and the enjoyment of those she was able to share with loved ones. We are fortunate in having been given superlative care and attention by a myriad of health care professionals in all facets of her treatment. You know who you are and to try to name you would be impossible, particularly for all those who work in the background and are all too often nameless. Thank you all. We are grateful that her suffering is now over Among her many endearing features was her generosity of spirit expressed in so many different ways, of sanctuary to kids who needed "a place to stay", or to organizations providing basic human needs to the marginalized or disadvantaged. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to the UCW of Young Church, 100 -222 Furby Street, Winnipeg, MB R3C 2A7, or to a charity of your choice. The funeral service will be at Young United Church, 222 Furby Street, at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, October 28, 2016. We will be saying goodbye to a remarkable lady, truly a celebration.
