MARY TATARYN (nee SHADLOCK) Mary passed away at the Grace Hospital in Winnipeg, on October 28, 2016 in her 102nd year. She will be dearly missed by her sons, Bill (Janet) of Ajax, Ontario and Edward (Jane) of Winnipeg: her grandson Matthew of Ajax, Ontario and her granddaughter Christina (Adam), and great-granddaughter Paisley, also of Ajax. She was the beloved Aunt of Susan (Ron), John (Kathleen), Robert (Suzanne), Paul (Wendy), Joseph, Linda (Dalton), Radford, George (Olga); and sister-in-law Irene. Mary was predeceased by her parents George and Nellie Shadlock of Teulon, husband William, brother Michael and sister-in-law Anne, brother-in-law Michael and sister-in-law Minnie, brother-in-law Harry and sister-in-law Kay, brother-in-law Nick and sister-in-law Doris, and brother-in-law Fred; and nephews John and Jesse. Mary was born in north Winnipeg on December 14, 1914. She attended the Ukrainian Catholic St. Nicholas School (Immaculate Heart of Mary), Margaret Scott, Isaac Newton, and graduated from St. John's High School in 1933. Mary attended the Ukrainian Catholic Church of St. Nicholas and the Blessed Virgin Mary Church. She was married to Bill in 1937 in the Blessed Virgin Mary church. Mary and Bill moved to Brooklands shortly after where she was a member of the Holy Ghost Ukrainian Catholic Church. Mary sang in several choirs including the Institute Prosvita, Ukrainian Blessed Virgin Mary and the Holy Ghost church. She was a member of the Ukrainian Catholic Woman's League, held the office as President and other positions at the Holy Ghost church, and belonged to the Brooklands' Ukrainian Ladies Club. After 13 years, living in Brooklands, Mary and her family moved to Weston in 1949 where she resided until 2001 when she gave up her house to move to Columbus Courts. In her younger years, Mary worked as a nurse maid (nanny) to several families of the establishment in their private homes in Tuxedo. She was a devoted Mother and worked at the University Woman's Club from 1956 until its' closing as a club and residence in 1962. She was a devotee of the performing arts and found time in the 70's and 80's to attend the Ballet and Opera whenever she could with her neighbor Evelyn Martin. Seasons tickets at the Manitoba Theater Center were also a welcome gift. When visiting family in Toronto she experienced a Blue Jay's game, and became a fan for life, thereafter watching every game on the sports net channel. Mary or 'Baba' as she was fondly called, looked forward to visiting her grandchildren in Ontario, bringing her perogies and cabbage rolls on the airplane as long as her health allowed her. She later lived for their return visits to Winnipeg. She loved cooking and baking for her family and friends and gardening was more than a hobby as she always had a manicured lawn and productive garden which she was recognized for while in her own house. Columbus Courts, where Baba lived independently, was a very suitable and welcoming alternate home. She was held in reverence by so many of the tenants who referred to her as 'little Mary'. Throughout the years she so enjoyed their friendship and support that she would not consider leaving. Mary attended Father Stanley's Mass at Columbus Courts on a regular basis and her devout faith and hardy Ukrainian determination played a role in her long and not so easy life. In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to a favorite charity. Service will take place on Thursday, November 3 at 1:00 p.m., at Neil Bardal Funeral Centre, 3030 Notre Dame Ave. Rev. Stanley Jawarski presiding. Interment will take place at Brookside Cemetery, reception to follow. NEIL BARDAL FUNERAL CENTRE 204-949-2200 neilbardalinc.com
