Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • In the summer of 1972, my friend Dave Hustler and I were bicycling across western Canada. In Lundar, Manitoba, Dave had bike trouble that necessitated him hitch hiking back to Winnipeg for repair parts. We pulled up in the front yard of a house in Lundar and met Hjortur Hjartarson and his wife Siguross and asked if I could camp on their property for a couple days to wait for Dave's return. They graciously agreed. Hjortur was every inch the handsome Viking, with a thick shock of white hair brushed straight back, high cheekbones and sharp features that looked windswept, as if he had spend a lifetime gazing at the horizon from the prow of a viking ship. Siguross was sweet and rather hard of hearing. She had just as much difficulty pronouncing our names as we did theirs. It was quite funny. One afternoon, their son Thor dropped by for a short visit. He made quite an impression, a younger version of his father, strikingly handsome with the same angular features, ruddy complexion, and equally friendly. You could tell his parents were proud of Thor. They all are were quite interested in the two long-haired young hippies who were pedalling their way across the country. On Dave's return from Winnipeg a day or two later, we set off again, but I dropped the Hjartarsons the occasional travel update and Christmas card for a few years. Over the years, I would think of them and in 2015, I had occasion to be driving through Lundar, retracing our bike route, on my way to my own father's resting place near Solsgirth, Manitoba. I couldn't find a trace of the Hjartarson house, at least where I remembered it to be. I went to the cemetery along the highway, and amazingly, I came across Hjortur and Siguross's grave markers. I had to go up the road to Eriksdale to get some flowers and came back to put them at the graves. This Spring, my wife and I will be travelling to Iceland, and it made me think back again to my Icelandic acquaintances in Lundar. A quick internet search led me to the sad news that Thor passed just a couple months ago. I wish I had had an opportunity to meet him again. I send my condolences to Thor's sister and the extended family and want you to know that Thor and his parents remain in my thoughts.
