JAMES EDWARD BRITTEN On Monday, November 7, 2016, James (Jim) Edward Britten passed away peacefully, with his family by his side, amid laughter and tears, at the age of 90 years. Dad will be dearly missed by his daughter Barbara, son Tom (Sandra), grandchildren Kelsie (Kyle), Marina (Ian), and numerous nieces, nephews, and dear friends. Jim was predeceased by his wife Clara, son-in-law Jeff May, parents Herbert and Olive, and mother and father-in-law Arni and Jonina Johnson. Jim was born on October 31, 1926, and grew up in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He graduated from Daniel McIntyre High School in 1944 and went on to rise through the ranks of MTS. He started at MTS as a cable splicer, and this part of his career was highlighted by his work in the 1950 Flood. He retired as manager of Outside Plant and Engineering. On August 17, 1951, Jim married the love of his life Clara Johnson. Together they made their home in St. James where they spent the majority of their married life and raised their two children, Barbara and Tom. Dad and Mom's home was always a gathering place for family and friends. Dad was an only child, but when he married Clara he inherited many brothers and sisters. He would make every effort to ensure that all visiting relatives were made to feel welcome. Dad was a man of few words but his actions spoke for him. He was the rock of our family and a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, and uncle. Dad loved travelling and together with Mom explored Europe, the USA, Vancouver, as well as his many trips to the family farm in Ashern, Manitoba. He was an avid curler, gardener, bowler, and later in life, Dad medaled in Wii Golf at his home at the Sturgeon Creek Retirement Residence 1. We will miss Dad's strength, his guidance, and his unconditional love. A celebration of life will be held on November 18 at 2:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue, with reception to follow. A graveside interment will take place prior to the service at 11:00 a.m. at Brookside Cemetery. The family would like to extend many thanks to the staff and caregivers at Sturgeon Creek Retirement Residence 1, and to Dr. D. Breckman and his assistant Nicole. A heartfelt thanks goes to the nurses and doctors in the Surgical Recovery Unit at the Health Sciences Centre. We could not have asked for more compassionate care at such an important time. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to CancerCare Manitoba or Heart and Stroke Foundation. For those who wish to sign the online Guest Book please visit our website.

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • To Barbara, Tom and your families. Sorry to hear about your Dad. He was a great man. I have good memories of having a good chat with him when we would run into each other in Safeway when I still lived in Winnipeg. One thing that comes to mind is when your Mom and Dad were featured on the Mountain Dew bottles. Again sorry about your loss and I speak for Ardith and Mark as well. - Posted by: Paul Tilley (Neighbourhood friend) on: Dec 02, 2016

  • Just wanted to send our condolences to you both Barb and Tom as well as the rest of your family. I have fond memories of visiting Uncle Jim and Auntie Clara when I was younger. I was only 17 when I drove to Winnipeg from Vancouver by myself and I remember helping Uncle Jim replace the cement pads on their patio on a hot Summer Day. I guess he wanted to make sure the kid wasn't just sitting around but I didn't mind. I actually enjoyed spending that day helping him and still have the fond memory of it today. Anyways just wanted to let you know we are all thinking of you and Uncle Jim will be dearly missed. It won't be the same visiting Manitoba with out seeing him and Auntie Clara as well. You all take care. Love Dave and Helma - Posted by: David Johnson (Cousin) on: Nov 12, 2016
