RUBY THORNTON SIMMONS A very special life began on January 26, 1923 - her name was Ruby Thornton Simmons. The curtain fell on her long and gracious life early on the morning of Sunday, November 13, 2016, at the age of 93 years. The line between birth and death was full of love and happiness. Everyone who knew Ruby knew that she was a generous friend and a most loving person. Her relationships ran very deep and she was amazingly kind. As the last scion of the family, Ruby is survived by her nieces and nephews; great-nieces; cheeky great-nephews; and great-great-nieces and nephews. She was the remaining member of the original Simmons family, having been predeceased by her parents, Oscar Edgar Thornton Simmons and Louise Marie; her three brothers and one sister. Business life for RT (as she liked to be known) started and ended at Great-West Life where she was a valued employee and a spark plug for the Great-West Follies. Each year, they put on a show with the assistance of Ruby, make-up, costumes and talent was made to shine. As Ruby grew older, she did not get out as much, but kept the mailman busy with a Publishers Clearing House enthusiasm. Most of the purchases were ear-marked as gifts for family and friends...she was always prepared! Anyone who needed Ruby's assistance completing a given task was more than welcome to ask for help or guidance. She was always ready to help or give advice. Advice that was sure to be helpful and welcome. Ruby will always be an angel on the shoulders of her loved ones and we will always try to live up to her goals. There was a special hymn that Auntie Ruby asked to have sung at her Funeral, but she later decided that she did not want a formal Funeral. In compliance with Ruby's wishes no formal Funeral Service will be held, however the hymn will be quoted in part here...sung to the tune of 'Danny Boy': "I cannot tell why He whom angels worship, Should set His love upon the souls of men, Or why, as shepherds, He should seek the wanderers, to bring them back, They know not how or when" Ruby Thornton Simmons was an earth angel and was always available to those she loved. All were welcome with no prejudice or pre-judgment. She will not be forgotten by any whose life she touched. The most recent way she was touched, was by the 'Big Bang Theory' and Sheldon's favourite song, 'Soft Kitty...and finally she may be the sleepy kitty and purr, purr, purr'. In lieu of flowers, donations in Ruby's memory to a favourite charity of your own would be appreciated. I met Ruby while volunteering at Misericordia - I helped her respond to emails from family. I found Ruby to be such a pleasant, interesting and genuine person whom I looked forward to seeing every time I volunteered. I am so sorry for your loss. - Posted by: Marilyn McLeod (Volunteer at Misericordia) on: Nov 24, 2016
