EVELYN BURNS (nee HORBATIUK) 1928 - 2016 In the early morning of Tuesday, November 15, 2016, our Mom, Evelyn Burns left us quietly and without fuss, which was her nature. To those who had the pleasure to call her friend, Aunt, Grandma and Mom, she was an individual of great caring and generosity. She was the first to volunteer, lend a helping hand or just listen and nothing was ever too much to ask as it was her nature to put others first. She was most happy when she was doing something for or giving to others and many an individual has been the recipient of one of Mom's colorful quilts, knitted items or crafts. Born on February 14, 1928, Mom was baptized Marie Gabrielle Eveline Turcotte and raised by the Rodway family in Winnipeg. Raised Roman Catholic, she took great comfort in her faith and was an active member of the church community. She was a city girl that married a rural boy, William Horbatiuk in 1948 and together they raised their three children: Alan (Katy), Joan (Grant), Debbie (Al). She found herself a widow at too early an age when Dad died unexpectedly in 1972 and left Mom to raise her children and run the household on her own. Undeterred, she returned to school to retrain and found a job with Health Sciences Centre as a dietary clerk. During this time she met and married Herbert Burns in 1975. She worked at Health Sciences until her retirement at age 65. Following retirement, Mom and Herb enjoyed many years of traveling across Canada and throughout the United States. After Herb passed in 2001, among the many things she missed the most were the long drives they took together throughout Manitoba. Not one to sit idly by, Mom continued to remain active by taking bus tours, cruises and participating in many classes offered through Creative Retirement. Living at Metropolitan Kiwanis was a special time in Mom's life. She spoke fondly of the individuals she met there and we were often required to rush home from an appointment in order to make it to bingo or whatever scheduled activity was being held on that day. Unfortunately, her failing health this past year did not allow her to attend as many events as she would have liked. She lived a full and happy life and passed knowing she was surrounded by many who loved her deeply. According to Mom's wishes, she will be cremated with a service to be held at a later date. If friends so desire donations may be made in memory of her to Cancer Care Manitoba or a charity of your choice. Glen Eden Funeral Home & Cemetery 204-338-7111

I met Evelyn back in 1975 when I went to University with her daughter Debbie. Evelyn was always so generous with her time when I was at her home as we were often doing something like trying to sew or looking at recipes. As the years passed I would see her off and on when visiting Wpg. After moving back to MB in 2006 I saw her more often at Debbie and Al's home. Gerald and I enjoyed Evelyn together. We all shared stories about our travels over an occasional breakfast or lunch. Even as her health failed Evelyn used her humour and caring manner to make others feel good. We are happy to have known her. We know her family have many good memories of their mother to celebrate and we wish them well at this sad time. - Posted by: Pam & Gerald (Friends) on: Nov 20, 2016
