JOSEPH PETER MALINOWSKI July 31, 1923 - November 28, 2016 With great sadness the family of Joe Malinowski announces his peaceful passing at Gimli Betel Nursing Home on Monday, November 28, 2016, at the age of 93 years. To Dad, family meant everything and will be lovingly remembered by his son Robert (Penny); daughters Amelia (Brian) Humeny and Valerie (Randy) Hutch; daughter-in-law Judy Malinowski; sister Victoria (late Walter) Kaminski, nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren, as well as numerous in-laws, nieces and nephews. Dad was predeceased by his wife Rose; son Carl; parents Frank and Paulina; sister Emily, and great-granddaughter Jessica. Dad was born on July 31, 1923 and lived his entire life in Gimli on the original homestead farm, except for the past six years where he enjoyed living at the Waterfront Centre in Gimli. Dad was a jack of all trades and a master of many. Besides running the farm, Dad was a painter, fisherman, and owned and operated J&B Glass for many years. He also loved working as a heavy equipment operator at the Gimli Air Base. He proudly told of his winning the Western Canada Air Force Heavy Equipment Driving Competition in Edmonton and his Second Place finish at the Canada Wide Competition in Toronto in the late 1950s (which he claims he should have been first). After the base closure, he then went to work at Seagrams (Diageo) until his retirement in 1985. He enjoyed living life to the fullest with his love of sports, especially hunting, golfing, curling and baseball where he was a pitcher, hence his nickname of "Smokin' Joe". Dad was a collector of tractors even though it would drive Mom crazy. He would always tell her it was for one of the boys!! Many people will fondly remember him as a practical joker. He never tired of them. Dad was always thankful for the special friendships he had with Gary McGregor and Father Art Seaman. In his retirement Dad and Mom loved to travel. They went to Europe, many US states, including Hawaii and Alaska, and also went right across Canada in their beloved motorhome. We would like to thank the staff at the Gimli Home Care Service, Gimli Community Health Centre and Gimli Betel Nursing Home for the wonderful, caring service you provided to our dad over the past few years. Memorial Mass will be held on Wednesday, December 7, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. at the St. Michael's Church, Gimli, MB with Fr. Art Seaman officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sts. Cyril & Methodius Cemetery, Box 92, Gimli, MB R0C 1B0. Gilbart Funeral Home, Gimli in care of arrangements. www.gilbartfuneralhome.com

  • Know that I'm thinking of you Bob, Amelia and Valerie. Your dad was a great person and is a great loss. Growing up I couldn't have had better neighbours. I remember particularly one time when I was driving by he was near the road frantically waving his arms so I came to a screeching stop only to have him tell me that my back tires were moving forward! That was Joe......will be missed. My deepest condolences. - Posted by: Marian Berezowski (Family friend and neighbour.) on: Dec 06, 2016

  • I will always remember Jajo putting a spoon in his hot tea, removing it, and then quietly placing the boiling hot spoon on the nearest person's hand. Not to mention his look of innocence when that person got upset with him. - Posted by: Chris Hutch (Grandson) on: Dec 03, 2016
