Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryCORNELIUS (NEIL) DE RUITER July 31, 1931 - December 2, 2016 Dad was born in Nijmegen in the Netherlands on July 31, 1931. In 1932, the family moved to Amsterdam where Dad grew up. He was always proud of Amsterdam. When we were children we visited Amsterdam a few times though we only remember places from looking at the pictures. Dad served in the Royal Dutch Navy, mostly in Dutch New Guinea, and after returning to Amsterdam he decided to immigrate to Canada and in April 1954 arrived in Winnipeg. Dad started working for Manitoba Power Commission (later Manitoba Hydro) as an electrician for 15 years, and then in the Manitoba Hydro head office, totalling 32 years of service. Dad was introduced to Mom in Dauphin in 1959, where Mom worked as a nurse, and in 1960 they were married in Winnipeg. In 1988, both Mom and Dad retired and they spent 12 winters in Texas where he took up as a volunteer electrician at the Rio Grande Bible Institute. These were enjoyable years. When it became too much for them they retired again and since 2001 they remained home in Winnipeg. Dad served on many church committees, and his favourite scripture was Psalm 90:17 "Establish Thou the work of our hands, yes the work of our hand establish Thou it." He is survived by his children: sons, Ian (Berni) and Darryl (Kristin), and daughter Sherry, five grandsons and one granddaughter. Dad passed away on Friday, December 2, 2016 at his residence in Winnipeg, MB, and is now reunited with Mom in heaven. The memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 10, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, 162 Hwy. 52 W, Steinbach, MB. If friends so desire, donations in memory of Neil may be made to Christian Fellowship Chapel, Winnipeg, MB. Arrangements by BIRCHWOOD FUNERAL CHAPEL 1-204-346-1030 OR 1-888-454-1030

I have known your dad since he came to Canada and he spent much time with me and my parents in our home on Enfield Crescent in Norwood - in fact when your mum and dad married, your mum married out of our home on Enfield. I only just, about a month ago, caught up with your dad by phone from Australia , where I now live, and just saw the obit; online while cruising the Carribean for Christmas with my wife Robin. Our sincerest condolences on your loss. I have many photos of his earlier years to remember him by.
