ROBERT JAMES (JAMIE) MATSUKUBO It is with deep sadness that we announce the unexpected passing of our much loved son, Robert James (Jamie) Matsukubo. Jamie will be missed by his parents, Marcia and Brian; his brother Jeff and nephews, Jesse and Dexter, as well as his loving aunties, uncles and cousins. Jamie was born in Winnipeg on June 27, 1970 and he attended his school years at Carpathia, J.B. Mitchell and Kelvin. His love of music took Jamie to Toronto in 1996. He had much pleasure from his small recording studio and his pursuit of other musical endeavours. Jamie had a gift and love for learning a wide range of musical instruments and enjoyed playing in bands and writing and recording his music. No formal service will be held. Jamie will be honoured and remembered in our family gatherings. We know his close friends, past and present, share our love and sense of loss in Jamie's passing. Condolences & Memories (8 entries)

  • I am sad to be finding out about this now. Jamie was an incredible talent. I spent almost an entire summer with him recording songs I had written as he had begun building up his studio, his dedication to the craft and to learning it the best he could was impeccable. I remember he began training under a Juno Award winning producer and he had him re-produce the song we were working on together. I remember telling Jamie that his version of my song was far superior to that of the Award Winning Producer he was shadowing. This is a great loss for the music community. Jamie loved music, and his dedication and focus to learning more about it and being the very best he could be was unparalleled. I will cherish the music we made together and my condolences to his family and friends for this prodigious loss. - Posted by: Joy (fellow musician) on: Dec 01, 2022

  • I had the honor and great pleasure to play with Jamie recently and in the past 5 years. He was so easy to get along with on a personally and profesional level. Time flew by spending hours writing music. I will miss him dearly. Listening to music we recorded brings a smile to my face and I'll cherish the time we spent on stage and recording. Such a huge talent he was and great guy. He will be greatly missed. - Posted by: David (Band mate and friend ) on: Jan 09, 2017

  • Perhaps not the most appropriate for close family to send condolences, however, as Jamie would appreciate, his Auntie Wendy is quite often not "appropriate". So many memories, bittersweet now of course. From the time he was a "wee" lad, he was so full of life and was always joyous in nature. I do remember when he was young, he was always "late" for everything...including coming home from school, or late for dinner while out playing with friends and had a different and unique excuse each time..flying through the door out of breath and saying "sorry Mom, must be something wrong with my watch!" As we all know, Jamie's talents, musically surpassed anything any of us could even hope for or achieve..........he was more than even he knew was possible. Jamie kept in touch and wrote the most caring and loving messages and I know it was heartfelt and genuine. He was an awesome person. I could write pages and pages about Jamie but everyone knows he was the "best"... Until the end, was still the most loving, caring and generous person on this earth and I know all of his family and friends mourn his passing. On a personal note, my heart aches and I will forever be less without Jamie. Rest in peace my sweet nephew...........always love you...until we meet again. So much love, Auntie Wendy - Posted by: Wendy Hyslop (Aunt) on: Dec 30, 2016

  • Whenever I think of Jamie, my thoughts are always of good times and laughter. From eating Ichiban noodles at lunch at the Matsukubo home while watching (and mimicking) Sesame Street vignettes to him pretending to morph into a possessed guy while we crept through St. Mary's cemetery (and successful in making me cry), to me mailing my arachnophobe friend spiders encased in a cassette case (and in turn, making him cry) to him being one of my groomsmen at my wedding. He was a sensitive old soul, a very talented musician and he (as well as Jeff) will forever have an important and special place with me. Rest in peace Namanoomi... in Jacuzzi... - Posted by: Gail vdBerg (friend) on: Dec 27, 2016
