SAMUEL GOWRILUK October 23, 1925 - December 19, 2016 Sam Gowriluk passed away peacefully at the age of 91, at the Holy Family Home in Winnipeg, on Monday evening, December 19, 2016. He was born on October 23, 1925, and was raised on the family farm of George and Mary Gowriluk in Gonor, Manitoba along with his seven brothers and one sister. Sam started his sales career as a driver / salesman for Brown's Bread in 1945. In 1948, he met the love of his life, Ella Hlady, working behind the counter of her family's general store in Greenwald, Manitoba. Their first commitment as a couple was sharing a bottle of Wynola Cola at the store. They were married in 1950 and moved to their house on Linden Avenue in 1955 where they raised their three children, Dennis, Karen and Jim. Sam joined his brothers at Midland Fruit in 1947 where he spent the rest of his career as a salesman for the growing company. As a Salesman, Sam covered many towns in Manitoba as well as stores and restaurants in Winnipeg. He forged many close friendships on his sales routes. He was known as Sam from Midland and drove various models of red Pontiacs over those years. When the Codville Co., acquired Midland in 1972, Sam continued on as a salesman with them until he retired at age 62 in 1987. Outgoing and generous, Sam was active in the Shriners, often participating in the Shrine Circus and the Ukrainian Businessman's Club of Winnipeg. Sam and Ella bought their cottage at Otter Falls in 1961. It quickly became a special place for family vacations and weekend activities. Sam enjoyed water skiing and jigging for pickerel in the summer, hunting and cutting wood in the fall and snowmobiling and ice fishing in the winter. In addition to the many family dinners in the gazebo, Sam especially enjoyed cooking his special fried potatoes for Sunday breakfasts. On the weekends, the driveway was often full of cars or the dock full of boats as many close friends and neighbours decided to drop by for a visit. In retirement, Sam spent countless hours tending his large vegetable garden and became an expert Wine maker. Sam had a special fondness for his grandchildren and spent many hours teaching them how to fish, drive a boat and catch night crawlers on the lawn at night for the next day's bait. Sleepovers or Christmas Eve at Baba and Gigi's were always a special treat for the grandchildren. Sam is survived by his sweetheart of 66 years, Ella; his sons Dennis (Belle) and Jim (Anna); his daughter Karen (Rick) Zurba; his grandchildren Erin Gowriluk, (Tim Lazaruk), Evan (Sandi) Gowriluk, Breanna Zurba, Michael Zurba (Jenna Schellenburg), Lewis and Scott Gowriluk; great-grandchildren Sam and Severin Gowriluk and Emrick Zurba; brothers Bill, Art and Ray, and sister Violet. The family would like to extend a special thanks to the dedicated staff at the Holy Family Home in Winnipeg for their loving care and compassion during Sam's stay with them this past year. A service to celebrate Sam's life will be announced at a later date. Glen Eden Funeral Home & Cemetery 204-338-7111

  • Many good times and memories were spent with Sam and Ella at the lake. As a young child, Evan loved visiting Sam as he always had these small juice cans that no one else at the lake ever had.....fond memory. Ceremonial beeping of the boat before arriving at someone's cottage. Our girls loved the tire swing that Sam had set up at the lake. In later years, Evan and I enjoyed dropping in for a glass of Sam's homemade wine. Sam will be missed, he was a generous , sweet man. - Posted by: Evan and Dana Page (Family friends) on: Dec 24, 2016
