ALICE (VI) SMITH (nee KELLOUGH) October 25, 1925 - December 16, 2016 Vi Smith passed away peacefully, with her daughter by her side, on December 16, 2016 at the age of 91 at the Betel Home in Selkirk Manitoba. Vi was predeceased by her husband George of 64 years; her five brothers and six sisters. She leaves to mourn her passing, her three children, George (Janet) Smith, Richard (Monie) Smith and Lorraine (Brian) Byrnes, her six grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was the second youngest of twelve children born to Lee and Alice Kellough. She met George, the love of her life in 1939; they were married in 1944 and together raised three children, George, Rick and Lorraine. The family have many happy memories of road trips to the beach, tobogganing in the winter time, annual corn roasts and yearly Christmas Eve parties where the entire neighborhood would gather at their wartime house and enjoy Vi's amazing home cooking. Vi and George had many adventures together and moved around quite a bit making lifelong friends everywhere, before settling down on Ferry Road in East Selkirk where they enjoyed many new friends. All were welcome at their house and no one ever left hungry. She talked about her family every chance she got and was very proud of her children and grandchildren. There was rarely a day when her home was not filled with her grandchildren. They all loved sleeping at Nan's house, even in their teenage years. Vi was a wonderful combination of strength, warmth and kindness and was someone who we all admired, loved and respected. She was a devoted and loving mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend who will be remembered for her honesty, sense of humor, her warm smile and beautiful blue eyes. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 18, 2017 at Gilbart Funeral Home, 309 Eveline St., Selkirk MB. A special thank you to all the staff at Betel Home for their kindness, caring and support. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in her memory to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. Wonderful Mother God made a wonderful Mother, A Mother who never grows old, He made her smile of the sunshine, He moulded her heart of pure gold; He made her nearly an Angel as anyone could ever be; God made a Wonderful Mother and gave that dear Mother to me. Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • I have many fond memories of "Auntie" Vi. She was always very kind. Vi always had a story to tell me about the early years of friendship with my parents. We always enjoyed visiting her and Uncle George in East Selkirk. I learned something new every time I saw her. She will be missed. Our sympathies to George and Janet, Rick and Monie and Lorraine and Brian. - Posted by: Debbie (God child) on: Feb 11, 2017
