DANIEL PETER SELINGER
Born: Apr 09, 1953
Date of Passing: Jan 06, 2017
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryDANIEL PETER SELINGER Daniel Peter Selinger, 63, of Winnipeg, Manitoba, died peacefully on Friday, January 6, 2017, after the rapid onset of lung and liver cancer. Throughout this time he remained clear minded while taking the initiative to look after himself in the community until he accepted Palliative Care at the Riverview Health Centre. Dan was born April 9, 1953 in Regina, Saskatchewan, to Nick and Margaret (Crawford) Selinger. At eight years old Dan moved to Winnipeg with his mother and brother Greg. He was a life long resident of St. James where he stayed in touch with his childhood friends, especially Doug Smith; as well as his relatives on his father's and mother's sides of the family across Canada. Dan loved music, playing guitar; board games particularly chess; and reading. He built a library of sheet, vinyl, tape, CD and digital recordings; and books focusing on the visual arts, science, mathematics, and chess. Dan savoured a good meal, as well as a coke and a burger. Religion became central to his being as he wrestled during his adult life with schizophrenia and committed to Catholicism, regularly attending mass at St. Ignatius Church. He walked lightly on the earth and met his goals while respecting those around him. Friends Housing Co-op is where Dan lived for over two decades. He had many long time friends with whom he enjoyed the recreational, social and volunteering activities. He was devoted to Cheryl Dyck and valued the company of Brian and Colleen Feldman. The community life at Friends nourished his sense of belonging and place. Dan was predeceased by his parents. Dan was close to his mother talking with her every day. He is survived by his brother and his sister-in-law Claudette Toupin, his nephews Pascal and Eric, and many cousins. A funeral will be held at St. Ignatius Church (Chapel entrance - 925 Jessie Street) on January 14 at 11:00 a.m. with Father Joe Newman who also came to Riverview Health Centre to perform the Sacrament for the Sick with Dan. A celebration of Dan's life will be held at Friends Housing Co-op at 2:00 p.m. on the same day. Dan is at rest in a columbarium at St. Boniface Cemetery close to his mother. The family would like to thank the staff of the Riverview Palliative Care program as well as the home care Palliative team, the Grace Hospital, CancerCare Manitoba, Friends Housing Co-op, family physician Dr. Winogrodzka, and the Desjardins Funeral Chapel. Donations in memory of Daniel Selinger can be made to the Grace Hospital Foundation, Friends Housing Co-op, or CancerCare Manitoba.
