DON NACHTIGALL Sadly our Dad, Don Johnston Nachtigall, passed away on Saturday, January 14, 2017. Dad was born October 18, 1934 in Steep Rock, Manitoba. In his late teens, he moved to Winnipeg where he started work at Searle Grain Elevators. He eventually found a job working at Manitoba Pool Elevators where he worked until his retirement. Dad married our Mom, Lois, in July of 1965. They had four children together. Dad enjoyed the outdoors. We all have great memories of camping at Steep Rock long before it became a Provincial Park. Back then you could throw a pickerel rig in and come up with two fish on your line. It was easy to catch your limit, and we always did. In his later years, we did the fish catching and Dad would get a big smile on his face as he enjoyed his meal of fresh pickerel. He also enjoyed the horse races. Often, when we were kids, we would head to the Assiniboine Downs for a day of racing. Our Dad enjoyed many sports. He was a great curler and enjoyed a competitive game of horseshoes. Dad loved a cold beer and a game of cards. His day wasn't complete unless he played his game of hearts on the computer. He enjoyed watching the Winnipeg Jets. Our Dad was a very easy going man. It didn't take much to make him happy. He was kind, caring and soft spoken and never had a bad word to say about anyone. He was just a great guy. Left to remember our Dad is his wife of over 50 years, Lois, their son Darren (Sherry), son Steve, daughter Susan (James) and son Scott. He was known as Papa to all his grand kids. They are Kelly, Josh, Jeremy, Matt, Joel, Jason, Markus and Emma. He is also survived by his sisters Arla and Bernice and his brother Grant (Dawn). He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews. Don/Dad/Papa you will be greatly missed. There is a hole in our hearts that will be hard to fill. We love you so much. Until we meet again. As per Dad's wishes cremation has taken place and there will be no formal funeral service. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to The Winnipeg Humane Society. Condolences & Memories (7 entries)

  • ‘Mr. Nachtigall’ the father of my great friend Scott. I am saddened to know that you have gone, only to know that I will look forward to seeing your smile and kindness once again in heaven above. Mr. Nachtigall has left an indelible mark of what kindness of a father can have for an individual who did not grow up with one. He took me along with his family on our unforgettable trips to Steep Rock. His gentle soft spoken voice to deal with all situations in life is what I hope I can instill in my children. - Posted by: Sohail Robert () on: Jan 25, 2017

  • Sorry to here about Don - Posted by: Don Hart Lois's Cousin () on: Jan 24, 2017

  • Don has gone to join Bill and maybe they will soon have a game of bid whist. I am sure they will not have any trouble finding two more friends to join them. We lost touch after Bill's passing in 2008 but I often thought of him and Lois. We were close friends when the kids were young. Lois, remember the first weekend away when the 4 of us went to Grand Forks for our big holiday. It was the first time we had left Susie and Garth over night. Lois and I were nervous Moms but we managed to relax after a bottle of strawberry wine and lots of laughs. Great memories. I would love to talk to someone in the family. • I had the opportunity to work with Don in the late '80s and early '90s when I was a young lawyer at Thompson Dorfman Sweatman and Don was involved with Norm Dietrich at Manitoba Pool Elevators in acquiring and developing the network of new elevator, anhydrous and crop protection sites in Manitoba. He was the best client contact that anyone could ask for: always pleasant and positive, with a good but quiet sense of humour and always looking forward to another trip to Steep Rock to go fishing. - Posted by: John Stefaniuk () on: Jan 22, 2017

  • I'm very sorry to see the passing of Don Nachtigall as he was not only a excellent employee with Mpe but also a good friend and he will be missed. Don one of 6 employees to start our pool luncheons in 1998 and still going strong for the retirees and he will be remembered and a toast held in his honor at our next luncheon. Please accept my condolences. Dennis Hunter, former General Manager with Manitoba Pool. - Posted by: Dennis Hunter (Co worker Man. Pool Elevators) on: Jan 22, 2017

  • Don trained me in the 80's in the fine art of record-keeping (hand written) for new grain elevator construction. I was not a great student, but I couldn't wait to talk to Don and listen to his quiet sense of humour every day. Don was a gentleman. Please accept my condolences to the family. - Posted by: Pat Ward (Co-worker ) on: Jan 21, 2017
