When I think of my uncle Dino, I always envision him as a man that was either: smiling, laughing, telling jokes, or telling us stories. He enjoyed life! My favourite memories of him were set around Manitoba beaches or when the families would have a get-together. Those were some of the best times of my life! Zio Dino, when I was little, often took my aunt and his children to the beach on the weekend and he would sometimes drive by my place and pick me up, too. I especially loved hanging out with my cousin, Daniela; and of course, all my other cousins, too! Other family members, or friends, would often meet them at the beach. Firstly, we'd find a nice grassy picnic area for the ladies to hang out, and to have a tasty family barbecue, later. Secondly, he would always drive or walk with us to the beach where he kept an eye on all of the kids. When we got back to the picnic area, he often occupied our time by having us look for twigs to help start, or feed the briquette fired barbecue. My aunts made the best "porpettes", (little hamburgers). I always loved my aunt's desserts; especially, the brownies and cheesecake. Generally, before or after eating, Zio Dino always had us walking, playing badminton, or he'd organize us (even me,) in a game of soccer with him. We were often entertained by my uncle's driving, or comments that he would make in the car on the way to the beach, or on the way home. He seemingly loved to tenderly tease my aunt and I loved the way she, generally and embarrassedly, laughed it off. I always felt so good around them and the whole family. Those really were "fun in the sun," days! I also have dear memories of my uncle when we would have a family get-together. It was easy for him to get people laughing and having a good time! He used to get the kids laughing, too. I don't know what it was; but, he would have me practically hysterically laughing so hard that I couldn't stop... long after everyone else did. He knew that just shyly covering his mouth and giggling, could generally keep me laughing; so, he'd do just that, repeatedly. I remember, Daniela, pleading with him to stop, but, I think he used to like to see how long he could keep me laughing. In any case, I would get sore cheeks; but, I just loved it! Thinking of my uncle Dino…makes me want to smile. - Posted by: Mary Campbell (I'm his niece.) on: Jan 29, 2017
