Born: Oct 04, 1938
Date of Passing: Jan 28, 2017
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryHOLLIS JAIMINEE MAHARAJ On January 28, 2017 Hollis Jaiminee Maharaj completed his incredible journey of life which began October 4, 1938 in Mt. Stewart village, Princess Town, Trinidad and Tobago. He has shared this journey alongside his soulmate and wife Padma and together they welcomed into this world their son Yaneil (Lorena), and daughters Anita (Mike) and Andrea (Randy). Hollis was born into a simple family in Trinidad. His mother Bassie (Seukeran) and father Ragunanan raised him alongside his brothers Dyanand (Sita), Anirude (Shirley) and Mike (Ena) encouraging all the boys to study life and appreciate all that it had to offer them. All the boys left the island and eventually made their homes in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Hollis and Padma married in 1964. After their first child was born the desire to further Hollis' educational experience and to provide their son with limitless opportunities motivated them to immigrate to Canada. In April, 1968 they arrived in this new land they would call home. Hollis enrolled at the University of Manitoba Commerce program and simultaneously provided for his family by selling insurance and running a convenience store. Anita and Andrea were born and Hollis continued to study. He graduated in 1975 and began his long career working as a Chartered Accountant. In 1977 Hollis and Padma's life began a profound transformation. Spirituality became the beacon that guided them in their decision making and actions. Hollis was a founding member of the Winnipeg Sai Centre which ran in their home for years until growth necessitated a more accommodating location. He continued to contribute to the national organization throughout his life. Hollis' career flourished eventuating in him owning his own practice. Hollis touched the lives of his clients and their families and all those who came across his path. He treated everyone he met with the same dignity, respect and love regardless of their education or occupation. Hollis was able to establish deep connections with people that bonded them together forever. His favourite saying, and one repeated to everyone was "life will unfold as it must". He believed this axiom as being the truth of life and he lived in this truth. His faith in the omnipresent, omnipotent and omniscient allowed him to live a life he chose with conviction. This world has lost a true gentlemen and an exceptional human being. His grandchildren Davendra, Rowan, Quiana, Caelan, Aveena and Garren, along with many nieces, nephews, cousins and relatives will feel the loss of this man forever. Hollis was a pillar in the lives of his friends and the community and will missed immensely. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, February 2, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at Thomson "In the Park" Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Boulevard. The family wishes to thank Darlene, Agata and Gayle for all the care and compassion they provided the Maharaj family during this time. I have known Hollis all my life. I have many fond memories of he and his family. As a young boy, I used to sometimes accompany him on his insurance route in Trinidad. He liked singing, telling jokes, and some stories. I remember the excitement of his marriage ceremony when he married his beautiful bride, Padma. It was a big, wonderful wedding. I had moved to Canada the year before him and saw his tenacity and commitment first hand. He raised family, ran a business and went to university at the same time. I would often meet him at the University of Manitoba at night studying. I was doing the same thing, and he would often encourage me to keep focussing on the goal, He graduated and eventually became a chartered accountant. He was a mentor and spiritual leader to many in the community, and was known fondly as Uncle Hollis. He has accomplished a lot in his life and made a difference in the lives of many. He will be missed. My best wishes to his immediate and extended family as they come to terms with his loss. It will not be easy, but let his memory and influence always be a part of you. Rest In Peace, Hollis. - Posted by: Gerry Sankar (Brother-in-law) on: Feb 04, 2017

One of the saddest moments is when you hear about the loss of a great friend. Hollis was a wonderful man. I will never forget all that he did for me and my family in my difficult moments in the year 2001. I could never had made it through without him. He was a pillar of my strength and brought me closer to Swami. My heartfelt condolences to the Maharaj family during this difficult moment. Heartfelt condolences to the Maharaj Family! Hollis Uncle was more than family to us. He was someone that I admired and looked up to. He was a great role model and a true exemplar of love in action! He was a pillar of strength and touched the lives of each and every person he came across. He transformed many lives including my own. I know I would not be the same person today if it were not for his kindness, care, and concern he showered upon our family. In my heart of hearts, I know that he has merged with Mother Sai! He will be missed by all of us. Sending Love and Light to the Family! Love from Shelly and Arvind From California - Posted by: Shelly Gupta () on: Feb 02, 2017

My dear and close friend, Hollis Maharaj, was a gem among friends. We knew each other for as long he and his family have been in Winnipeg. Besides being family friends, Hollis worked alongside with me during our work involving the construction and renovation project at Hindu Society Temple at 854 Ellice Avenue in Winnipeg. We exchanged family visits and I provided catering services for the marriages of his children. Hollis was a true friend you could count on. He will be missed not only for our close friendship, but also his personal qualities, his charisma and his loving and helping nature. So long, my friend . Happy journey aboard. - Posted by: Rajinder Goyal (Friend) on: Feb 01, 2017

I have many fond memories of Uncle Hollis. The two that I will always remember and cherish are his joyous singing renditions (Ging Gang Gooley..) at the Sai picnics around the campfire, and his passionate harmonium playing during Satsang. His smile was always ear to ear and he had a way of making me feel important and that I mattered. Love and prayers go out to Aunty Padma and the rest of the family. - Posted by: Aneil Bahadoosingh (Family friend ) on: Jan 31, 2017

We were neighbors for over ten years and the family was the most gentle and kindest people we have ever had the privilege to know. When we moved, the only regret we had was leaving them. Hollis displayed an openness to people that was rare and much treasured. Our hearts and love go out to the family, especially his beloved wife and children. We treasure the boundless memories that were created during that time. Bob and Cheryl Crane - Posted by: Bob andCheryl Crane (friends and neighbours) on: Jan 31, 2017
