HELEN ALMEINA VANCOTT July 16, 1936 January 30, 2017 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved wife, mother and grandma, Helen Almeina VanCott (née Ruff). Helen is survived by her husband of 56 years, Douglas; her daughters, Janice (Don), Tracey and Alison (Robert); her grand-children, Jenna, Emily, Aidan, Georgia and Eryn; her sister Violet (Gordon); her brother George; and sisters-in-law, Natalie and Doreen. She leaves behind many nieces, nephews and friends. Helen was a woman of many talents. She enjoyed gardening and loved to spend time in her yard. She loved knitting. Her mittens, scarves and hats were always a treasured gift on Christmas morning. Quilting was another of Helen's passions. She spent countless hours crafting beautiful, hand appliquéd quilts, some of which won awards. A quilt was lovingly made for each grandchild. Helen was a fantastic cook! It was impossible to have just one serving of one of her meals. She always made sure to make everyone's favourites each Christmas, even if that meant making dozens of different cookies and squares. She wanted everyone to be happy. Which leads us to Helen's greatest gift, her enduring love of family. She was completely devoted to each and every one of us. As we mourn the loss of dear Helen we are comforted by our many cherished memories. How lucky we are to have had someone who makes saying goodbye so hard. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her memory to JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation), 1000 191 Lombard Ave., Winnipeg, MB R2Y 2C6 or online at https://jdrfca.donordrive.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=donate.event&eventID=1064. Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • I was so sad to hear of her passing. My thoughts are with you all, Mr. Vancott, Alison, Tracey, Janice and to all of your families. Mrs. Vancott was like my other "mom" as a young child. I remember spending time at Alison's house as much as my own playing with our combined Fisher Price village. She always had lemonade and treats for us throughout the day and made me feel loved. Such a wonderful woman. She will be greatly missed. My heart is heavy thinking about your loss.(Hugs) - Posted by: Patty Aspin Prevost (Friend) on: Feb 05, 2017

  • So very sorry to hear of Mrs Vancott's passing, thinking of you all, Doug, Janice, Tracy & Alison. She was such a kind lady. I remember when I was a young Mom that I was telling her that I wanted to learn to quilt one day. She told me that she had learned and went on to show me the very first quilt she had ever made. She had entered it in the Red River Exhibition Quilt/Craft Show and had won 1st prize...it was no wonder!! It was so beautiful and not a stitch out of place and so elaborate, I couldn't believe it was her 1st quilt!! Anything your Mom did was done very precisely and was always done beautifully!! She was a neighbour that I always looked up to....thinking of you all!! Sharon - Posted by: Sharon McLaughlin (Aspin) (Friend) on: Feb 04, 2017
