SHEILA REID It is with love that we remember Sheila June Reid who passed away peacefully on February 4, 2017, surrounded by her family. Sheila was a writer, a teacher, and an idealist who saw the potential for goodness in people and in the world. Sheila graduated from the University of Manitoba in 1961 and started what would become a life-long career as a freelance writer. She returned to university while raising two young daughters, graduated in 1972 with a Bachelor of Education, and taught in the Winnipeg School Division for over 20 years. Sheila married Wilmer in 1987. It was a joining of minds, hearts, and families. They travelled extensively, collaborated on many plays, and thoroughly enjoyed their grandchildren. Left with loving memories are her husband Wilmer Penner; daughters Laurie Bleeks and Karen Watt; sons-in-law Todd and Mike; Wilmer's children Jon (Blane), Christine (Mark), Rick (Jen), and Tom (Sharon); treasured grandchildren, Dustin, Kate, Meghan, Emma, Cody, George, Sam, Van, and Bridget; sister Margaret (Denny) May; nieces Tracy and Joanna; cousins Joan (Gerry) Hoogeveen, Jeanne (Kem) Luther, Lynda Wray, Marj Booker; and many dear friends. Our deepest thanks to the staff at Riverview Health Centre for your exceptional care. Your kindness and compassion allowed Sheila to live her last days with dignity and grace. Special thanks to Dr Kaethler of Steinbach. A celebration of Sheila's life will be held on February 18 at 11:00 a.m. at Birchwood Funeral Chapel in Steinbach. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Sheila may be made to Riverview Health Centre, Unit AB2, Winnipeg, MB. Arrangements by BIRCHWOOD FUNERAL CHAPEL 1-204-346-1030 OR 1-888-454-1030

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • Dear Will, It was with great sadness that I read in the Free Press of Sheila's passing. I first met Sheila at Elmwood and in the years following enjoyed our collaboration in the theatre productions of Murder in the Cathedral and her amazing play, Humbug. I will remember Sheila as a fun and inspiring person with whom to work. My thoughts are with you and your family. Rod - Posted by: Rod & Doreen Brown (Friends) on: Feb 17, 2017

  • Sheila was one of those unique people one quickly learns to prize. I first met her when she was librarian at Elmwood High School, and I, literacy consultant for the Winnipeg School Division 1. During the planning for an in-service on reading across the curriculum, her support was special - imaginative, practical, visionary. And always with touches of humor. Later, when I was privileged to perform a piece I had written at the Low German presentations she and Wilmer staged, she was the most encouraging, helpful and ease-instilling person back-stage. As we age, our lives are increasingly filled with memories. Sheila's joyful, enthusiastic and supportive presence will remain a precious one for me. - Posted by: rudi engbrecht (educational colleague) on: Feb 13, 2017
