Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryMAKI (MAX) UTSUNOMIYA Max Utsunomiya passed away suddenly, but peacefully on February 17, 2017 at the age of 89. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother and friend. He is predeceased by his parents Genji and Kiwa, and by his sisters Louise and Taye. Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 63 years, Sumiko, his children Maxine (Stacy), Perry and John. His smiling face and witty humor will be missed by his grandchildren Misty, Michelle (Chad), Myron and great grandchildren Bren and Shana as well as extended family. He is also survived by his siblings Yas, Ken (Kathy) and Amy. Max was born in Haney, BC. In 1941, his family moved to Coaldale, Alberta to avoid internment during the Second World War. They worked on sugar beet farms until 1948 when they got their own farm. He later moved to Winnipeg where he met Sumiko and they were married June 6, 1953. Max was self-employed and worked very hard to provide for his family. When he was not working he was volunteering within the community such as: Folklorama, Folk Festival, St. John's Ambulance and Luso Soccer, to name a few. He was also involved in the Manitoba Buddhist Church where he used to teach Sunday school and volunteered his time with any maintenance including the renovations and expansion. Max will always be remembered for his generous nature and always there to help friends and family. Max has chosen to have a small funeral on February 25, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue with reception to follow at Manitoba Buddhist Temple, 39 Tecumseh. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Japanese Cultural Association of Manitoba, 180 McPhillips Street (204-774-5909) or the Manitoba Buddhist Temple in his memory. Max was my dad's partner for many years. I loved him! He was funny, hard working and made bbq marinade that I still make as per his recipe. RIP Max - Posted by: bill turchinetz (friend) on: Sep 12, 2019

I will miss Max very much. I spent many months travelling with Max, working together across Canada. He was a sincere, dedicated person who loved to help others. He would swim in the coldest water, change a tire on the busiest highway in the heaviest rain to help someone, offer to cook for them or to give them a healthy relaxation massage. He always said "my bag is packed and ready to go to work". A very kind man. I was saddened to hear of his passing, but happy to have had the opportunity to know him. I met Maxy when we (my aunt & I) were getting ready to open our business on Pembina Hwy, we met through another friend.. He painted and helped around as were getting ready to open, Even after that he came around fairly often. We got to know him well we went from acquaintance to friend in short order.
