SYLVIA GOSKA With heavy hearts we announce that on February 19, 2017, Sylvia Goska was embraced by our Heavenly Father while surrounded by those she laughed with, lived for and loved. Her amazing legacy will be cherished forever by her husband of over 60 years, Ed; her daughter Char; son Michael (Mary); grandchildren, Kyli (Kris), Karina (boyfriend Jordan) and Matthew; brother Alex (Loretta) and a large extended family including nieces, nephews, in-laws and friends, too numerous to mention. Sylvia was the youngest of six children born to Lucia and Michael Nafostowicz on Ukrainian Christmas Eve, January 6, 1934, at their family home on Mountain Avenue. On May 26, 1956, Sylvia married the love of her life and soulmate, Ed. Although he was a "cocky" guy, he won her heart by taking her "out to nice places." Those places multiplied by their travels and included many trips to her favourites, Maui and Mexico, with friends and family. Endless and wonderful memories were also created at the cabin at Lee River Falls, where friends and family have gathered over lifetimes. Sylvia also enjoyed bowling and did so for almost 40 years. For many years she worked at Wilson's Stationery until she started her best job in life, full-time wife and mother. Throughout her life she took care of not only her family, but her community through St. Gerard Parish, the Catholic Women's League and Perogy Pinchers. For years she gave communion at Bethania Nursing Home and Concordia Place. Sylvia's passion to help others and her endless love for all led her to volunteer for over 20 years with CancerCare Manitoba. In a sad twist of fate, it was cancer that took her life, but certainly not her fun and feisty spirit. That spirit will live on forever and is missed already by all whose lives she touched. The family wishes to thank the staff at Concordia Hospital and everyone who extended compassionate care to Sylvia. In lieu of flowers, please contribute to CancerCare Manitoba. Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, February 24, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Gerard Parish, 45 Foster Street, Winnipeg. Interment to follow at Glen Eden Funeral Home, 4477 Main Street, West St. Paul, MB. • Ed and family, we are so very sorry for your loss and we offer our condolences. Remembering the fun times we had at Lee River. - Posted by: Margaret & Marc Vinet (Friends) on: Feb 25, 2017

  • Sending our heartfelt sympathy to Ed and family on Sylvia's passing. We have special memories of Sylvia & Ed joining in the festivities at my aunt & uncles home. Each time we met it was like no time had passed. Once I began working at the Canadian Cancer Society I had the opportunity to reconnect with Sylvia as a volunteer. Thank you for sharing this lovely tribute. So loved and deeply missed. Please know that our thoughts are with you at this sad time. • My deepest condolences to Ed and the entire family. There are so many great memories growing up across the street from Sylvia and Ed (my Godparents) and the Goska family since I was born. Many stories have been told by Sylvia and my mom (who remained a very close friend and neighbour of Sylvia to this day) of how much a "terrible" brat I was growing up in the neighbourhood (Sylvia, I just can't believe that I chased you and my mom around the neighbourhood with a broom one day!!!). I will always remember Sylvia for her wonderful sense of humour and knack for making people laugh with her quick wit, but what really stands out for me, was her remarkable gift of giving to her community. She was quite the caring and giving person. For many years, Sylvia always lent a hand donating her time and effort at our annual golf tournament in memory of my father and in support of CancerCare MB Foundation...ironically, the disease that took Sylvia's life. Our family was so appreciative of her commitment and volunteerism. Sylvia, you will be missed, but never forgotten. Our memories will live on forever. Rest in peace. - Posted by: Cam Moskal (Godson, family friend, childhood neighbour) on: Feb 23, 2017

  • I have many fond memories as a child and teen visiting everyone in Winnipeg. Auntie Sylvia stands out as a funny, yet fiercely loving woman of her whole family. My sympathys are with you for this devastating loss - Posted by: Kathy Zickenberg (Family Friend) on: Feb 23, 2017

  • So sorry for your loss. Sylvia made everyone laugh and feel good. I met her when my son played hockey with Michael as young boys. We always had a good time. Your mother was a truly good person. She will be missed. - Posted by: Dianne (Osborne) Wickenden (Friend) on: Feb 22, 2017

  • We are so deeply saddened today to learn of Sylvia's passing this past Sunday and extend our most heartfelt and sincere condolences to all of Sylvia's family. I am especially sorry that when we learned about Sylvia being hospitalized, we were leaving Winnipeg the next day and that I didn't get one last chance to visit and talk with Sylvia. No matter how she felt, she always made everyone around her smile with her cheery disposition and a "little joke". Sylvia has left a footprint on the hearts of all those whose lives she has touched while on this earthly journey and she will always be remembered with great love. Again we are sorry we will not be back in Winnipeg to attend Sylvia's funeral. Know that our thoughts and prayers will be with all of you over the days and weeks ahead. With our love, prayers and caring thoughts, Diane and Ron Chatfield - Posted by: Diane and Ron Chatfield () on: Feb 22, 2017

  • A genuinely great person and outgoing. Cheerful anytime we met and a bright and happy voice to hear when I phoned G.K. Ed. We weren't as close lately as years ago but it was always a pleasure to bump into Sylvia and Ed out and around. We're sorry to hear of your loss Ed; the world is worse off without Sylvia. Eternal Rest Grant Onto Her O Lord. - Posted by: Zbig & Brenda Kowaliszyn (Friends) on: Feb 22, 2017

  • My condolences to Ed and the family. Sylvia was a very caring, funny and strong woman and I'm glad I knew her(through church and CWL for many years). She will be missed, but is now in a better place. RIP Sylvia. We love you! - Posted by: Karen Jurkowski (Fellow parishioner/CWL member) on: Feb 22, 2017
